| An interesting review of Fincher's THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO. |

| Not really a review or critique, more like a brief study of Fincher's form and technique, minus any value judgement.
That said, it's everything I expected. |

Not much explicit judgment there, but there's plenty of it between-the-lines. - Sharky wrote:

I didn't know how this film would go. I expect something more like SE7EN than what that review describes. Either way, at this point, you can probably count me out. |

| For the film to be really good, it'd have to rise above the source material. And that happens very rarely. And I don't really trust Zallian to be able to do it.
It looks like a bit of pulpy fun, but honestly, bring on 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. |

| From everything I've gathered, it looks like a lot of things, but "fun" certainly ain't one of them. Like everything else Fincher's ever made, it'll just be 2 n a half hours of miserable emptiness. |

| Yeah, I sure don't think this film looks like a particularly grand time. Fincher loves to be bleak.
That said, I do find THE SOCIAL NETWORK thoroughly entertaining and enjoyable. |

| Wasn't the tagline from the first trailer, "The feel bad movie of Christmas"? I'm not expecting this to be any fun. In fact, - Spoiler:
... the anal rap bit
... doesn't sound much fun at all. |

| I like Fincher's work, especially The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. I liked the Swedish version of the film, so I'll probably give this one a look. |

| BENJAMIN BUTTON's gotta be of of the lamest films I've ever seen. It's like watching Leni Riefenstahl attempting to do Disney. |

| I found it to be sensational. The acting, score, cinematography and production design were all absolutely fantastic, and thematically, it made me realise what's important in life. Definitely up there with the best of films, IMHO. |

Stanley Kubrick getting hit on the head and thinking he's Stanley Kramer is what I'd call it. It's one of the coldest, oddest romantic epics going around. But I'm glad that Fincher was willing to try his hand at something like that, regardless of the result. |

It's definitely odd, but I wouldn't describe it as "cold." |

I've seen BUTTON just the once and while I remember enjoying it enormously I find that I can remember practically nothing about it. |

It's definitely odd, but I wouldn't describe it as "cold." It is cold, very much so. Fincher's aesthetic embraces distancing, artificiality (in a very mechanical sense) and lack of affect. He's always trying to ape Kubrick and Mann.. |

Nevertheless, the performances and score give the film a warm, soft tone. BENJAMIN BUTTON feels removed, if you will, but not cold. And yes, there is a difference. - Sharky wrote:

There may be some Mann there, but there's very little Kubrick in Fincher's work. |

Yep. Low-grade Fincher. But I thought FACEBOOK-MOVIE was worse. |

Nevertheless, the performances and score give the film a warm, soft tone. BENJAMIN BUTTON feels removed, if you will, but not cold. And yes, there is a difference. Alexandre Desplat has got to be one of the coldest, dullest, least affecting composers in the business. He's like Philip Glass at his worst. - Harmsway wrote:

There may be some Mann there, but there's very little Kubrick in Fincher's work. Disagree with that. Like with PT Anderson, the framing, use of long takes, and even the plot (2001 almost in reverse - with both ending with the Starchild) takes after Kubrick and several others. |

I don't like Desplat all that much, but his score for BENJAMIN BUTTON strains at the seams to be "magical" and "charming," with a very sentimental edge. Bad it may be, but "cold" is a very poor descriptor. It ain't the score for INCEPTION. - Sharky wrote:

P.T. Anderson has some Kubrick influence, particularly as far as THERE WILL BE BLOOD goes, but Fincher's mise-en-scene doesn't much mirror Kubrick's, in BENJAMIN BUTTON or any of his other films. |
