Lalala's posts on GF, YOLT and FRWL, as well as all of this attention to Moneypenny got me thinking on an idea about Moneypenny: One can forget Scaramanga, Goldfinger and Blofeld, and instead focus on Miss Moneypenny as being the super villain of the franchise. Absurd? Absolutely, but could it really be out of the question?
Doctor No's Moneypenny scene establishes the relationship between the secretary and Bond. She comments that he never takes her out to dinner, to which he merely hums, seemingly ignoring her. While she smiles, she is absolutely besotted. Could this fuel her exasperation and provide her with a motive, and be the mastermind behind all of the villains' schemes? Over the countless missions he goes on, she is well aware of his sexual conquests. She comments that Bond's "old case" sounds "interesting" obviously well aware of the situation he is in. Given this, is she the one who informs SPECTRE to humiliate Bond by filming a scene between Bond and Tania? She is pretty annoyed at Bond's "old case", and the title in itself suggests it's a girl from his past, which demonstrates that he's had her before. Plus, Bond didn't take the photo of Tania, implying he'll recognize and take notice of her. This could mean that he pays more attention to other girls, and not her, ultimately vexating her.
In Tomorrow Never Dies, Moneypenny comments that she knew about Bond's past relationship with Paris. At the party, Bond and Paris say they are acquainted, and that her friend was sleeping with him. Her friend could have told her that Bond carries a gun, and slips it under the pillow. Now, from when Carver here's the audio clip to when Paris' death, there is a time gap, in which he makes a few arrangements. Given that Moneypenny knows of Carver, he could have contacted her, or vica versa to see what it actually means. She so obviously informs him of their past relationship to jeopardize Bond's potential score and punish them both. She ends up dead, out of sheer jealously.
In terms of jealously, this is evident throughout the series. In YOLT, she doesn't miss the opportunity to drag Bond away from Kissy after the mission. In OHMSS, he promises her a date, but it doesn't eventuate, only to have been replaced by Tracy. Her envy is depicted through her tears at the wedding. Given that the wedding occurs in Portugal, could Moneypenny have contacted Blofeld and arranged for him to be there and kill Tracy? This is plausible, given that in DAF, now that Bond is single, she jumps at the opportunity to ask him to propose to her. He is obviously stunned. His wife is killed, and yet she already asks? Seems rather desensitized. She settles for a tulip, as it appears as one of the most romantic things Bond does for her. He later brings back a cigar in TWINE. It's so obviously a phallic symbol, but by this stage, she is just so angry at the fact that she can't get the real thing, and tosses it away. What about in Octopussy, when Bond gives a bouquet of flowers to Smallbone. She's aged by now, and yet she is envious of Smallbone because she was as pretty as she used to be. Now, where did Smallbone go after this? I'm sure Bond would have put in a good word for her, so why has she disappeared? Could Moneypenny have killed her?
In Moonraker, after Bond dispatches of Chang, Drax calls somebody for a replacement. Moneypenny would know of Jaws, whether it'd be in Bond's report or from him actually telling her, so could it be a stretch to imagine that she provides Drax with another henchman to punish Bond?
In recent years, Moneypenny has disappeared, and she is rumored to return in Bond 23. In Casino Royale, Moneypenny is absent, and so is the knowledge of Quantum. Given it's a reboot, perhaps she is planning everything from behind the scenes. As Le Chiffre, Mr White and Greene suggest, they are headed by a higher power. This could be Moneypenny. She could have attempted to get Bond before she joined the service, but couldn't, as he wouldn't give her the attention. She could then join the service to get closer to him - you know, keep your friends close, but your enemies closer type of thing. Alternatively, she could be on sabbatical, as Villiers and then Tanner seemingly replace her, so she would have knowledge of Bond, and took a break to form Quantum and get their motives and goals clear. Also, given M's employment record, she has employed many traitors of the past few years, so could it be a stretch to imagine her ability to hire straight, uncorrupted people is inefficient?
Is Moneypenny the ultimate Bond villain?
