When it comes to 60's Trek, I'm a Marianna Hill kind of guy. She was nova, that one.

"The Enemy Within"

Iss a'ight. The good/bad concept is intereting enough. The execution is decent enough. A fair, pretty average-level episode to me.

"The Man Trap"

It's a really fun episode, and an appropriate first-aired episode. I think it does the whole imposter thing better than "The Enemy Within".

I grew up on Enemy Within syndicated reruns. It was shocking when I got the DVDs and saw how much more explicit and violent the Kirk/Rand... harassment... sequences are.

She wasn't gonna report it, but... And then Spock teases her at the end. Most unfortunate.

MEANWHILE, ON DEEP SPACE NINE...

"Bar Association"

This is a pretty low pulse episode. Nothing really makes me sit up and pay attention except maybe a couple of the Quark/Rom scenes. But it's a fun episode and it's a good episode for the development it gives Rom. I'm a sucker for stories where the shy, underappreciated, kinda incompetent guy stands up and becomes more than he was. I had hoped TWIN PEAKS would do something like that with Andy, but he only got stupider.
It's funny how even in a minor DS9 episode, there's permanent change and development -- Rom's now a station engineer, and Worf's living on the Defiant.

"Accession"

A great Sisko episode, where he basically accepts being the Emissary. Best Prophets scene in a long time, very clever. A great Kira subplot, a great Miles/Julian subplot, and I found the bit where the priest murders the guy to be really shocking. A solid episode.

"The Naked Time"

Nearly gangbusters. It's got a pretty amusing teaser in my opinion. Lieutenant Dumbshit removes his glove on an alien world where everyone is mysteriously dead. The cherry on top is when Spock comes back in and says to guard against exposure. Of course, their head things (not helmets, more like plastic bags) are not sealed anyway.

Some nice character stuff. Justman wanted this episode aired first I believe, because of the character stuff. I think "The Man Trap" was the better move, as everyone is out of character here.

-"Because you're not me."

Star Trek - Page 3 Charliex085

Star Trek - Page 3 Charliex122

Another solid episode. I liked it this time a little more than usual. Walker is good as Charlie, and the whole issue of adolescence is interesting enough. But I have always seen this episode as approaching a retread of "Where No Man Has Gone Before". Or at least it strays too close to it and too soon after. And Charlie is no where near as interesting Gary Mitchell, and he's a whiny little bitch instead of Kirk's BFF. Plus, the threat of Charlie seems a little weak after Mitchell. I can't help but compare these episodes.

Oh, the ending is a little meh, when the floating green head shows up.

That I can understand. Though it's all on the ship until the end.

It was aired pretty late for how early it was made. Was that down to the special effects?

Yes. The first effects house for TOS was crap and habitually late.

As per Charlie X, I agree that Roddenberry went back to "average man cannot handle becoming a God" well way too soon.

"Balance of Terror"

Gangbusters. This episode has a singular mystique. Does any one episode so influence how we look at an entire century in the Trek timeline? I know it influences a lot of how I look at the whole setup of APOLLO, with the Earth-Romulan War being the World War II of the 22nd century, and United Earth being like America. The Federation is the real superpower to emerge from the conflict, but it's always been Earth in the driver's seat. I basically read Vulcan as Britain. Add to all of that the cool idea of the Stiles clan.

This episode works very well on a lot levels. Just so much going on.

"What Are Little Girls Made Of?"

I kept thinking of CAPRICA while watching this. While this episode is classic Trek cheese, it actually covers more ground on the idea of robots than CAPRICA ever really did. Because it was more concerned with religion and terrorists. This stuff probably made more sense and had more meaning for 60's audiences. I look at Trek with a somewhat ironic eye much of the time.

Some things are a little naff. The circuits are amusingly 60's. The spinning table makes utterly no sense logically. Kirk's "half-breed" idea is half-baked. But the episode works for me as a pretty solid Trek episode.

I like Exo III. I always like ancient civilizations in Trek. And the planet looks cool. Fake, of course. But cool in a 60's TV way. I have a very forgiving eye for this series, and you know I hate the ReBasterd stuff.

Fun, sorta atmospheric 60's space adventure television. And Andrea is hot.

4/5

Oh yeah. When I see this episode I think of THE NAKED GUN's line about "assault with a concrete dildo".

DS9 Season 4 Reviews

"Rules of Engagement"

Apparently the writing staff considers this episode a failure, but I quite liked it. Great performances, direction, style and story -- frankly, I love courtroom drama, and military courtroom drama even more -- and I like it when they remember that Starfleet is the military. My only real complaint is that Sisko never really wins the case and Worf never really proves the prosecutor wrong, in fact he basically proves him right -- Worf is only saved by a deus ex machina, which is weak. What makes up for it is Sisko's great "dressing-down" scene afterwards -- Sisko dresses down officers like no other. In actuality, Sisko feels like a real commanding officer much more to me than any of the others. Picard acted like being in the military was an annoying hobby and most of the time he was here to "see what's out there" and Kirk acted like being a Captain was basically for his own personal amusement. But I'm off track, great episode, great Worf episode especially.

"Hard Time"

Okay, having watched all of STAR TREK up to this point in chronological order, (excluding ENT), I can safely say this is the darkest episode of STAR TREK so far. I mean, despite the hopeful ending, I can really feel the DNA of BSG in this one. I mean, a regular character puts a phaser to his head and seriously considers suicide. And in a realistic, psychologically depressed manner, not bold heroism or exaggerated melodramatics. This episode is dark. I felt, while I was watching it, particularly while I was listening to O'Brien's "Roddenberry's dream is bullshit" speech, I felt a paradigm shift. I'm gonna call this episode as the point where this show stopped being STAR TREK: Deep Space Nine and became Star Trek: DEEP SPACE NINE.

"Shattered Mirror"

DS9 does ROTJ. Great fun, great effects, love the mirror universe.

And they could have simply kept his prison sequence in to explain such a gaffe. But then audiences would get bored. Need to keep them interested with bar fights.
