I hate that line. WTF is a bum doing there anyway? Ignoring the machine gun fire, I see.
Nolan's approach to humour seems to be, "Oh, I guess we need to put a joke in this spot."
Pretty much every attempt at humour I've seen in BB, TDK, or the trailers for TDKR have fallen with a thud.
Joker had some moments.

It's probably the one moment I like of Nolan integrating humor because not only is it so out of place but it just happens to be the same bum he met wearing the same exact coat he was given seven years earlier. It's so absurd I can't hate it.
But yeah, Nolan trying to do humor in blockbusters doesn't always work. Like Gordon suddenly turning into Will Smith.

I recently revisited The Prestige and it got me thinking that Nolan may be turning into a one-trick pony with his last few films. It's been said a lot that Dark Knight and Inception are all cold, urban capers that are dominated by mechanics rather than heart. Dark Knight Returns looks to be more of the same. I'll see it and maybe I'll be wrong, but I'm expecting more of a Dark Knight rehash-on-steroids stylistically and story wise, rather than anything truly escapist and original. Nolan should diversify every once in a while, like he did with Prestige. Although its understandable that WB may want to squeeze even more dark, big-budget, mindfuck "dramas."

Indeed. Nolan struggles at doing anything that isn't completely soulless and robotic.

Indeed
But as to Nolan I actually think he uses the early Bond model for humour - its often a throwaway element for the character's amusement rather than the movie asking you to laugh so it doesn't really intrude on the experience no matter what degree it tickles you (or not as the case may be).

That's what it seems he's trying to get at, but unfortunately unlike Terence Young, Richard Maibaum, Paul Dehn, and Sean Connery, Nolan's a 41 year old virgin with the sense of humour of an aphid.

It makes me think what other kinds of creative insults we can use if we are in no way attached to even the bare semblance of truth. In my next review of a Jack Black film I'm looking forward to using the phrase, "another plodding affair from washed up five foot two nigger Jack Black."

Really just because of that one scene with Zohan's dad eating hommus.

To be fair, Nolan does occasionally get a decent line or two in there. Michael Caine seems to get most of them, but then he always played Alfred with a dry streak, so maybe it's all in the delivery.

Pow zap wham! Thank you, ma'am.
Actually, Nolan should put that line in the movie after Bruce fraks Talia al Ghul.
