I kinda wanna see those TREKKIES movies, and THE CAPTAINS that Shatner did recently. But this looks fun. And check out Behr's beard at one minute in.

I'm tired, so I can't remember straight. Did you suggest that the episode "The Chase" would have been a good Star Trek VII? I think I mentioned I'd put in a Leo Getz-ish Ferengi. I forget whom I said would be good for the role.

"They FUCK YOU with the socialism!"

Yeah, I thought THE CHASE could easily have expanded to feature, assuming you could devise a bigger ending. It's weird to me how automatic it seems that some shows could be expanded ... about 10-12 years ago I spitballed how you could do an expanded BALANCE OF TERROR for a TOS reboot, just by adding stuff of E folk rescuing personnel from those bombed asteroid bases and making it the first mission with K & S aboard, so the 'how the roms look' aspect REALLY carries some weight.

As for TREKKIES, I thought the first one was a real hoot, though it turns out the funniest segment is all staged (if you've ever seen SIX DAYS AT ROSWELL, you'll recognize the TREKKIES sequence in question right off the bat.) Also, I keep thinking Andy Richter is in the Radio Shack part of the film, but I haven't re-seen it in years ...

TNG: "11001001"

Somebody's been watching STAR TREK III. This is a fun episode. There a few nits I could pick, but probably fewer than any of the episodes I've gone though so far. Does that make it the best episode thus far? Hard to say. I liked the Lore story more in "Datalore", but I have more complaints about that episode.

So far the standouts are "The Big Goodbye", "Datalore", and "11001001".

looks like the balls. I've seen both the Trekkies' which reinforce some thoughts and worry others. Not to mention Ira Steven Behr rocking the eccentric look as always.

Always liked that one. Mostly because of Minuet and Ron Jones (and his jazz renditions). And Riker getting his rocks off at the holodeck. laugh Can't remember any other TNG episode where it features a character using the holodeck as a sex program besides that Barclay episode. Then you have DS9 and Quark's.

Speaking of Jones, here's my ranking of his S1 scores:

"Skin of Evil"
"Datalore"
"Heart of Glory"
"The Neutral Zone"
"Where No One Has Gone Before"
"We'll Always Have Paris"
"11001001"
"Lonely Among Us"
"When the Bough Breaks"
"The Battle"
"The Naked Now"

TNG: "Too Short a Season"

I think there is a compelling story idea in this. Old man tries to right an old wrong that has long haunted him. I just don't think it comes off very well. The makeup is truly awful, for one. And the actor they got for Jameson isn't very interesting. The low budget really shows. And to be honest, I'm not so sure about the anti-aging story. I guess it fits, maybe it's just the actor they got. I can't quite put my finger on what's wrong about this episode.

I would have made Jameson older than 85. And I'd maybe even ditch the wife. The guy should be a legend in Starfleet. Maybe the Kirk of his generation, of the early 24th century. Change his birth year from 2279 to 2259. He'd have been a contempary of Kirk as Kirk was retiring. The mission discussed in the episode made his career. A Liberty Valance type deal.

Anyway, I thought the episode was far from the worst so far.

He was supposed to BE Kirk, originally. Once you know that this was supposed to be a sequel to "A Private Little War", a lot of things start making sense.

Of course, Roddenberry nixed that hardcore as he was adamant that TNG not rest on the laurels of TOS in terms of referencing characters, races and storylines (just rest on it by copying basic story ideas shamelessly). In some ways, I can't say as I blame him though -- putting Shatner on the show in S1 would've reaked of a publicity stunt. It was good that they waited a long time after De Kelley before doing that again.

Thing that puzzles me is that when Roddenberry nixed the idea, why did they keep the anti-aging drug subplot? It was obviously something meant for Shatner so he could get rid of the makeup midway through the episode. Overall I find it pretty mixed. Get rid of the anti-drug aspect and cast someone better and we would have had a more interesting show I think. Oh well.

The TMP Limited Edition opens with a nutty disco version of the main theme. Wild. And it closes with a cover of Ilia's Theme with lyrics sung by Shaun Cassidy.

WHERE THE FUCK DID THIS STUFF COME FROM!? laugh

The opening song should be the theme for a new game show called THE PRICE IS IRRELEVANT BECAUSE SOCIALISM

In the 24th century children have a better understanding of death, take calculus at the age of 10 and are always played by awful child actors.

TNG: "Coming of Age"

A watchable episode, but I find it completely unbelievable that Starfleet is THAT picky. laugh They'd take S1 Worf, but not the supposed Mozart of the 24th century? They never say why they will only take one person, and I can't imagine why they would. They'd never fill their starships! Let alone all of the starbases and all of their other facilities. It makes no sense. These four genius young people are clamoring to get into the Academy, and absolutely NO reason is given as to why they can't all just be accepted? Does the Academy have a desk shortage?

Wesley should have failed because of a character flaw. I fucking hate this Mary Sue character. Having Wesley fail because of a character flaw and learning a tough lesson would have been great. It's an opportunity sorely lost. They went the easy way and concocted the "we only take one" rule. It should have felt like a sure thing to the audience that Wesley would get in, but in the end it would be he that F***S it up. Probably out of arrogance or overconfidence. Then he could throw a hissy fit about how he's "too good" not to get in. Then have a hefty serving of humble pie.

Originally he wasnt taken because the other guy was a Benzite and Starfleet didn't have one yet. But Roddenberry nixed the "reverse racism" aspect.

Yeah how are there so many officers based on this episode? How the frak did Torres get into the Academy?

It came down to the Roddenberry edic that 24th Century humans were perfect, and Starfleet officers doubly so.

Because, y'know, the military only takes the best.

Yeah, I recall that Benzite point. And my mind went to Torres as well. laugh There are a lot of people who pop up who don't hold a candle to Wesley and his supposed genius. I'm glad they had him go his own way. As smart as he is, he's probably too qualified to waste away on a starship. He should have gone to the Daystrom Institute or whatever. Something civilian.

TNG: "Heart of Glory"

My favorite episode of the season (or series) thus far. I can't think of any substancial complaints. Though maybe the fact that Picard automatically assumes Worf is gonna help the other Klingons take over the ship from the battle bridge should have been dealt with. Yar is automatically suspicious too in the corridor. That kind of suspicion based purely on his species and not on his service history... Kirk wouldn't have put up with that if you look at "Balance of Terror".

Oh yeah, Worf says that Klingons don't take hostages. Someone didn't watch "Errand of Mercy" or THE SEARCH FOR SPOCK. laugh

Now the question, do I stay up and watch "The Arsehole of Freedom"?

TNG: "The Arsenal of Freedom"

Uneven. I love the LaForge stuff. That subplot is just about my favorite thing I've seen thus far. I love naval, chain of command stuff.

I had said that planet set from "Hide and Q" was probably the worst in the franchise, but I think maybe this one takes the cake. The production values in this episode is are pretty horrid, even by S1 standards. And those supposedly sophisticated flying weapons can't even hit someone from five meters away.

And the solution to the problem? Well, Geordi kicks some ass and Picard just says, "stop". All Picard had to do was say "stop" and the whole crisis was over.

Yeah, its a show I want to call a favorite but the stuff on the planet brings it down. And LaForge acts more like an inspiring commander than nuKirk.
