I watched quite a bit of Top Gear on BBC America last winter. Don't know what that really says about my life, but I really enjoy it.

It's a lot better than the American version, which runs on the History channel. Actually, I'm not even sure if it's still on.

Is Jeremy Clarkson regarded as one of the UK's national badasses or something?

Well he once punched Piers Morgan, but I'm not sure that qualifies you for badassdom.

Which I personally find makes up for a great deal of his 'assholery'.

That reminds me, has Morgan made good on his promise to return to the US if Scotland voted No to independence?

It triggers some of Clarkson's Badassdom, to call it that.

As for Morgan, I bet that nutjob Alex Jones is guarding the border to ensure Morgan doesn't return.

I've been cruising through Top Gear on Netflix. Pun absolutely intended.

Genuinely entertaining show with great hosts. I loved the episode when Clarkson and May drove to the North Pole in a Toyota Hilux, with gin and tonic in the console.

It's one of their more legendary challenges, no pesky Argentines to chase them. You knew you were onto a winner back in the day when the Man with the Pixalated Face pushed Clarkson into the ice pool. General consensus, and I agree, is that it blows the doors off TG-USA.

It's possible the original has spoilt us; maybe there is comparable chemistry between the presenters of the international versions, but it's hard to see it when you're used to Clarkson, May and Hammond racing, destroying and royally piss-taking their way through everything.

The American trilogy seem to have chemistry (I've not seen any other versions, the German and Ozzie ones briefly when they came over here) but you're right Blunters, we've been spoilt :)

Itching for the new series but I bet a few aren't purely on the basis with how Clarkson opens the show.

Looking forward to it too, but wondering if maybe Clarkson should consider winding his neck in ... recently, the practiced wind-uppery is maybe tipping over into 'actually just being a twat' slightly too often.

He probably should, you might think this'd tell him to keep schtum or the meeting at Beeb HQ would but this being Jezza, it's doubtful.

Brilliant. Didn't Clarkson post that on his own Twitter account? I seem to recall the humourless scum were out in force at that one.

Yeah, that's from Twitter. I can imagine many weren't impressed by that, or the "blokeness" episode, where James May basically called his co-hosts a couple of pansies.

If you can't get laid with a Triumph TR6, then you probably can't get laid at all.

First part of the Patagonia special did what it said on the tin etc. Two mentions of the Falklands, both understated. Personally, the little 'up next' bit at the end where you see motorbikes and someone saying: "They're looking for the Porsche" left a mark in the mind.

Still, the spare number plate read Bell End which would've been lost on the Argentines I'd imagine.

Nice use of the Robocop theme and healthy amounts from Master & Commander.

Indeed, Hilly - had seen it denounced as 'boring' by a friend on Facebook, but upon watching it this morning I'd say it was deliberately low-key precisely because the second part tonight is when it all kicks off.

I haven't seen it yet, but low-key isn't necessarily a bad thing. Recent road trip specials - namely the Middle East and Burma - have suffered from the way they kept trying to recreate the success of the Zimbabwe challenge, which worked because it was so low-key.

Indeed, Shadow et Blunty, low-key isn't all bad. Telegraph review bemoaned the boring nature of it but I wasn't fussed. Sure it's set-up in bits but it's a bit of fun over the weekend. I say fun, that is until tonight.

Both Hammond and Clarkson have said in seperate interviews on TV (Alan Carr of all people in the former, Rossy the latter) about how the production team and some of the younger types were scared witless.
I wonder if there's an Argentine Top Gear. "Today, our challenge...to capture Port Stanley in the fastest quickest time."

I'm expecting something as 'heart-in-mouth' as the pursuit by the angry rednecks in the USA special.

spoilerific...

Overall the second part wasn't too bad but there was a growing tension in my mind, like watching Titanic or Poseidon Adventure (bear with me) you know what's coming but you still dread the iceberg or big wave that's going to smash things apart.
Then it got as real as Top Gear's ever likely to get. The sight of the Argentines checking the cars and the gang holed up, the "Top Gear Security Consultant" ("The man with the pixalated face") and then the 'Time to bug out' bit, all sort of chilling and heart in mouth. The bikes checking the convoy, preparing for the attack..."By all means nobody stops."
Top Gear became something else.
Bastards. Utter overreaction. At least the police were seemingly on side in so much as helping get the teams out of there.
-The fact the cars were abandoned, the fact they were attacked, the mob and the fact they were asking (Top Gear) if an embassy could be reached. Like some film where they literally run for the border.
Bit of a smile when the team applaud the 4x4's turning up at the end.
As in 1982, thank God for Chile :)

I enjoyed it ... but as I said before, the time may have finally come for Jezza to stop being *provocative*.

I'm inclined to agree. The chaps said of late that they're getting on a bit (May & Clarkson mostly) and the show won't go on forever. Jezza needs to sort his act out.

The invention of Twitter does not help. Seems to be a platform for idiots.#

At the risk of inciting riots, one can't help but think Maggie in her prime would've loved this.

As a friend said in a fairly one sided argument about Clarkson (on her side), I am sure the gang will be up to more dickish things this time round.

I'm hoping BBC America will air some of the new episodes as you get them over in the UK. Or the Argentina episode, at least.

Probably not, though. They're really keen on playing Nightmare Kitchen and Star Trek: The Next Generation re-runs all day long.

Reality and cookery - oh, and reality cookin' - shows are about all that can be sold in the UK right now. I got my own 'Cunts in a Kitchen' to pilot stage, but then we had The Blender Accident. You may have read about it.
