Ah, that explains things. I was baffled when you said "Stop pestering me Shark, or I'll send my hubby Daniel over to sort you out." |

| Thinking more about DRIVE. From anyone else who's seen it, do you think this is a film where an interesting reading of it may emerge in time, or do you think it will remain an exercise in style?
I'm interested in seeing more the film that inspired it. |

I watched about half of III, but I got Suped out. I don't care what anybody says, I love SUPERMAN III. I fully recognize how it takes a giant crap on the legacy of Superman, but it greatly appeals to me on a purely absurd level. The movie just works for me. And Annette O'Toole is a huge improvement over Kidder. The Lana stuff is surprisingly touching actually.
And I'm a huge fan of Robert Vaughn. I still wanna make a movie called HEADS OF STATE where he'd play a scumbag Congressman named Gordon Head III who tries to get his half-witted former tennis pro son, Bruce Campbell as Gordon Head IV, elected as his successor. I was thinking you'd call it 'not by the hairs on your chinny-chin-chin.' NOT BY THE HEIRS ON YOUR CHINNY-CHIN-CHIN. |

That says a lot about the (lack of) quality of DRIVE. Though I thought you already saw the Water Hill pic? Either way, sounds like a re-watch is in order. I'd also look early Michael Mann (MANHUNTER and THIEF), Alan Parker, John Carpenter, and for a literary reference - Nathanael West. |

I'd also look early Michael Mann (MANHUNTER and THIEF), Alan Parker, John Carpenter, and for a literary reference - Nathanael West. Well, I'm not saying that in a bad way against DRIVE. It's simply got me a little interested. THE DRIVER really didn't do anything for me, though. I wouldn't compare the film to MANHUNTER, but to what I've seen of THIEF. The poor quality of the DVD is what really turned me off of THIEF. But I have an interest in noir, both classic and neo. So the film interests me in terms of carrying on that tradition. We'll see how the film fares in time. I just would have liked more to be honest. More action, more violence, more romance. And maybe somebody other than Gary Mulligan. More screentime for Christina Hendricks would have been great. More plot would have nice. And Hendricks naked would have been good too. But I'll say that the film is well made. And these days, with action cinema, that's enough to merit a view. |

| Winter's Bone (2010)
I wasn't mad about some of the camerawork and editing in places, but on a dramatic level I like this film quite a bit. I love the stark mood and atmosphere. The performances are sublime. From what I've read it sounds like they really kicked Jennifer Lawrence's ass during the production. The sense of life created in this film really impressed me.
2010 Best Picture nominiees
1. WINTER'S BONE 2. TRUE GRIT 3. 127 HOURS 4. THE KING'S SPEECH
THE KING'S SPEECH can kiss my ass. TRUE GRIT may be more technically sound than WINTER'S BONE, but WINTER'S BONE actually has blood in it's veins. Jennifer Lawrence is WINTER'S BONE is the one who really has true grit. |

I'm interested in seeing more the film that inspired it. What does 'exercise in style' even mean? |

| I'd need to see Drive again, and possibly more of Refn's work (anyone recommend any pieces in particular?), before I make any bold statements on Drive, but I saw it as much more than an exercise in style. |

Everything else Winding Refn has done before DRIVE is pretty different. I recommend BRONSON; it's an immature film but it has many brilliant "music video" moments. I further suggest that you stay the hell away from the wretched VALHALLA RISING. While I quite liked DRIVE, I can't see any depth to it whatsoever, and Refn, in his interviews about the film, doesn't seem to indicate he had much on his mind (he goes on about how he wanted to make it a "fetish" film, but little else). What did you see in it that many of us are missing? |

I'm interested in seeing more the film that inspired it. What does 'exercise in style' even mean? You know what it means. The film's more interested in form, convention and aesthetics, than character and ideas. Like all of Tarantino's flicks.

You're joking, right? It should have been trollface that got her head blown off, not Hendricks. |

| I hope her time is limited in DRIVE. She's not a very good actress, to be frank.
Those tits are deceptive.
I watched Cassavetes' SHADOWS yesterday. A solid first effort, but I thought FACES was miles better.
I need to see A WOMAN UNDER THE INFLUENCE soon. |

| She's shit, as well, but I thought everyone knew that.
People play off that Hendricks is something special. If that rack ain't being put to work, then she's useless. |

| She's still a better actress than January Jones. ;) Not to say that's a particular hard achievement. :) |

I'd rather hop in bed with January, though. I prefer those trampy types. |

| Is Miss Jones so bad? I know she has a blankness about her, but couldn't that be a highly intelligent reading of Betty? ;) |

| That might be true if she didn't have the same blankness - as you so aptly put it - in all her other roles. ;) |
