| Times gave it 4/5. Veers between silliness and Shakespeare apparently.
I'll see it Sunday. After a quick one in the pub. |

| Cumberbatch does deserve more screen time and not just because of my hormones. He makes a splendid baddie. |

| could be alright if there's a third Holmes movie that he plays the villain.
Not seeing either Ritchie films I'd have suggested Moriarty. |

| Yeah but with him playing Sherlock on BBC I can't see him doing as reversal with Robert Downey Jr. Even if they hadn't already done Moriarty.
There's rumours of the Master though. Not that I can see that happening either no matter how much I'd like to. |

He played both Watson and Holmes in his career (different to a BBC Sherlock/Ritchie Sherlock thing) but...lor', I wonder what he'd have thought of Sherlock. Man, he'd love it. |

| My greatest friend was a writer of Sherlock Holmes novels and I think he would have loved the BBC reboot.
But not the American version though, which is watchable but certainly not Sherlock. |

| I think the problem with the film - and Abrams' style in general - can be summarised thusly: - Spoiler:
Benedict Cumberbatch is Khan. However, the film insists on playing this straight so that it can build up to a big mid-film reveal.
This is a problem for two reasons:
Firstly, the hardcore fans already know that Cumberbatch is Khan. Because of this, the big reveal is a complete waste of time. Everybody already knows it going in, so they're forced to watch the film twist itself in knots trying to keep a secret that it thinks everybody knows is secret.
But secondly, the reveal that he is Khan is completely meaningless to casual and new viewers. Given his status within Trek canon, driving home the drama of his identity to an audience who has no idea who he is makes it equally pointless.
Also, magic blood and lens flares. |

| I agree with Rave, it's (for the most part) fun entertainment.
I admit I'm not a hardcore Trek fan (my 'collection' consists of boxsets of the original cast and Next Generation movies, and the '09 reboot, but none of any of the various TV series). This may be why I don't regard Abrams as the Antichrist or whatever. |

| I'm no hard core Trek fan either. I prefer my science fiction darker, more battered and rusty, and used. But the characters are a bit more light and shade this time around so I'll forgive the shiny shiny look of everything.

| I had been in denial that I was a Trekkie, but finally had to concede it when I counted the amount of times I was shaking my head in disgust at Star Trek Into Darkness.
One of the reviews sampled on RT says it best: A bad cover of your favourite song. |

| I was accused of being a Trekkie at the last works general knowledge quiz when the theme was Star Trek and I picked the name Kobayashi Maru for our team. And no-one else could pronounce it.
Well I didn't know they meant Star Trek the sponsored night walk around Exmoor, did I? |

I like the '09 film a lot, I think pretty funny and deft as far as light entertainment goes. It has very little to do with what Trek is supposed to be, but I think it succeeds on its own merits. Into Darkness, however, uses existing Trek lore as a crutch and goes nowhere interesting with it. It's quite honestly a riff on Wrath of Khan except with none of the elegance. |

| I don't even like Trek09 on it's own merits. I'm eager to see what I think of STD (my name for the new film). I may find it more "tolerable". |

| I'm so there...I loved the 2009 film. This is after despising much of the Star Trek franchise before it.
I do not give a flying fuck if anyone else here slags it off.
Live long and prosper. |

| I loved the 2009 film as well. A great homage and the little 'impersonations' made me laugh. The lens flares were too much, getting annoying, which is the same this time round. But I forgive it. I wasn't a huge fan of the original franchise, but then my treat to myself the day my divorce went through was the box set of wide-screen versions of the films to to that point, so maybe I like them more than I realise. I like the sexing up of Spock. Makes him an even more intriguing character. Or am I the only one wondering what his O face is like |
