She's not even African. I could tell you what her family's background is, but I think it is better than you go and look it up for yourselves. Perhaps, j7, this will help you understand why I find your argument that she will not be good for SKYFALL to be specious as best. If you can't even get the most basic facts about her right, how can we take anything you have to say about her seriously?

I like how j7 subtly included an upskirt shot in his picture set.

Jamaicans descended from West African slaves brought over to Jamaica by the Spaniards and Portuguese!!

That's your argument? That because Harris' great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandfather was from Africa, she is therefore from Africa? That's pretty thin, and clearly an argument invented to try and invalidate mine. Does Harris even identiy with her distant ancestors? Does she describe herself as a Jamaican-Briton, or an African-Briton?

I'll give you an example: my best friend describes herself as Moldovan. She was born in Chisinau in 1988, although the country did not exist until 1991. She lived there until she came to Australia a few years ago. However, her family is Russian. Her parents were both born in what is now Russia, as were her grandparents and her grandparents' grandparents. To all intents and purposes, she is Russian, because she is directly descended from a Russian family. And yet, she calls herself Moldovan because she was born and raised there. She openly rejects being called a Russian; the only time she ever admits any connection to it is when she describes Moldova as being "near Russia", and she only ever does that so people can roughly guess where she is from (since Moldova is not a well-known country). But by your logic, she is a Russian, and inescapably so. If you were to tell her this, you would likely find yourself with a concussion.

So if Naomie Harris is distantly related to someone from Africa, how does that make her African? The current theory of human migratory patterns suggests that homo sapiens (or our immediate relatives) came from Africa. That makes all of us African, albeit distantly so. What matters is how Harris describes herself, and I seriously doubt she identifies with Africa more than she does Jamaica.

I'm assuming you think this way because I disagree with you. Which is not really a valid reason for thinking someone is a moron. I personally think you're an idiot, but that's mostly because I find all of your arguments have been specious, and I have taken the time to demonstrate why. "Friends" my be too generous a word - but I have been in a position where I was responsible for the well-being of thirty-two university students on a day-to-day basis. Of those thirty-two, fourteen were Chinese, ten were Australian, two were German, and there was one apiece from Cambodia, Bhutan, Kenya, Ghana, Zimbabwe and Afghanistan. Last time I checked, at least three of those countries were in Africa (I'll let you guess which ones). There were also frequent periods where I was the first point of contact for any residents need, in a residential college with three hundred and twenty people living in it - and about fifty of those residents were from Africa. So while I might not - strictly speaking - have counted them as friends, I was in a position where I regularly interacted with people frmo Africa, and often had to solve their problems.

Actually I believe these days it's more along the lines of the homo sapiens interbred with their neanderthal cousins and the horrible gross intermixed offshoot went off to Asia Minor to form civilisation. Or something.

J7Wild has a point. It doesn't matter how Naomi defines herself; it only matters what other people think of you. In America she'd be classified as "African-American", even though she may have never been to Africa or been born in Africa. It's the "one-drop" rule; if she has any trace of black blood in her she's considered *at least* "African-American" by other African-Americans.

That's where I agree with JWild. She's "African-American" or "black" until she does something that other black Americans don't like..such as voting for a Republican, appearing on FOX NEWS, or marrying a white guy, and then she'll become an "Aunt Jemimah" or a "sell-out" or a "house n****r". And, like I said, it doesn't matter that she may have been born and raised in Britain or Jamaica...if you're a black celebrity, you are considered to be "African-American" from the point of view of the American media (which is the only media and point of view that is credible and worth anything) and part of the brother/sisterhood until such time as they feel the need to throw you out.

However, I disagree with JWild's argument that he is right simply because he has a black friend or has more black friends than the rest of us. And to prove to you that I'm not a bigot or a racist either, I would like to say that I also consider Charlize Theron to be African-American and feel proud to know that she is the second African-American actress to win the Best Actress Oscar in the past 10 years. You go girl!

I have to say though it isn't good to call someone 'African-American' if they are not American and don't identify with that. Thats just shoddy reporting.

And thats where I'll leave it for now.

Well Rihanna was born and raised in Barbados. Which would make her 'Bajan' (that's what people from Barbados call themselves).

Her mother is a black woman from Guyana and her father is mixed race. He was born in Barbados but he's of African and Irish descent.

So yeah, they all African-Americans. :face:
