- With the James Bond film franchise celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, there is a lot of buzz about the next Bond film Skyfall. What has remained a mystery, however, is whether Activision will release a new Bond game in 2012. But given all the hoopla, it makes perfect sense that a new Bond game will be released to mark the milestone.
If Activision is set to launch the next Bond game, it looks like we might have a very appropriate title: 007 Legends.
You might be wondering where this information came from. Well, it came from the Whois record for 007Legends.com.
In late March, Danjaq LLC (the holding company for James Bond copyright and trademarks), acquired the domain name 007Legends.com. The domain appears to have expired and Danjaq registered the name through Network Solutions. While this may not seem significant, it’s not the whole picture.
This week, I also discovered the domain 007Legends.com changed name servers to Att-dsa.net, the home of many of Activision’s biggest names like CallofDuty.com (Whois) and Skylanders.com (Whois).
Though Mary Tuck, Activision’s legal counsel, typically registers domain names on behalf of the game publisher, when it comes to the best 007 domain of all, it’s Danjaq that owns the name. According to Whois records, Danjaq is the owner of 007.com.
This may end up being nothing more than speculation on my part, but with all the Bond surprises expected this year don’t be too surprised to see a new Bond game released.
And what better title than, “007: Legends”?
At the time of this story, Activision has made no official announcement about “007: Legends” nor does the domain name resolve to a web page.
Here’s a look at the Whois record for 007Legends.com.

| Best case scenario: Activision acquired rights to the likenesses of all six Bond actors to be featured on the next 007 game, hence "legends".
Probably not, but it's always been my dream 007 video game. |

| I gave up on video games long ago, but that's always a concept I've wanted to come to fruition. All the Bonds in one game, complete with levels based on the best sequences of the series.
George Lazenby escaping Piz Gloria on skis... I'd buy a Nintendo Willy or whatever it's called for that. :) |

| I wouldn't be surprised if it ended up as Craig or a generic Bond in all of the different scenes (assuming that is what the game will be). I hope they can get all the different likenesses. Getting voices might be a problem, too. |

| Well considering that they replaced Brosnan in GE because Craig is contracted as "Bond", it's safe to assume that Craig will be the Bond of the game.
But I would prefer there to be all the 6 in one. |

That sounds way too much like the Special Ops mode of CALL OF DUTY for my liking. |

That sounds way too much like the Special Ops mode of CALL OF DUTY for my liking. What about a open world sandbox game instead, with the 6 different actors and 5 decades available as options? |

| Co-op mode where any Bond teams up with another. Watch Brosnan and Moore come up with cheeky one liners. Dalton and Craig challenge each other to scowling. Lazenby not wanting to play with the others sits by himself and gets drunk. |

Still not keen on it. Sandbox games work because the player can go anywhere and do anything, and I just think a Bond sandbox game would involve the player spending most of their time travelling long distances between missions. Personally, I wouldn't mind them borrowing one of the gameplay mechanics of FINAL FANTASY XIII-2. The plot of that game involved travelling around in time, and so every time you entered a new area, you could locate markers that you could use to shift between timelines. You would then get to explore a the same area, but with a new layout. Assuming that 007 LEGENDS is a real game, I don't think it should copy this feature exactly, but it would be nice to be able to play the game over several times, with each of the six Bonds being able to access areas that the others couldn't. |

I was thinking you could skip the long distances flights voluntarily (or get up and walk around the plane, talk to passengers) - like how falling asleep in a hut in FAR CRY 2 is done. In that you set your alarm for the time when you want wake up. With traveling, you could just fast-forward till your near the destination - the journey charted in advance with a map interface. |

It would be interesting to see this for a literary Bond kind of game. The movies have always been too break-neck fast to lend themselves willingly to a sandbox setting. While I am still a little adverse to the thought, I do enjoy the idea of sitting at Bond's desk and having the phone linking to M ring and traversing freely up to his/her office, or picking the Bentley up from the garage, or having a bomb go off randomly outside the office. Sandbox games have that element of surprise that scripted linear games don't. It could work. |

| I still think sandbox games are over-rated, and only really work in certain genres, like the GTA games. |

| I think they're appropriate for certain genres. And I don't think Bond is the right genre for it. How, exactly, would this sandbox work? |

| So instead of a CALL OF DUTY clone, you want a GRAND THEF AUTO clone. |

The latter is a much more enjoyable series than the former IMO. If you're going to have to have a game where you're given the freedom to travel, live the high life, and carry out action-packed missions who better to play as than James Bond? |

| LA NOIRE tried it, casting the player as a protagonist who was pretty clean-cut, unlike the protagonists of GTA. The end result sucked. The player's freedom was severely hampered by the way they had to obey the law. |

| Forget the CALL OF DUTY and GRAND THEFT AUTO, what the Bond games should really take inspiration from is the METAL GEAR SOLID series. Tactical espionage is what the Bond games should start focusing on, less firefight and more spywork. That's why the sneaking levels in the Bond games work better for me.
Also, this should probably be moved to the games section. |

Who says Bond has to obey the law? He shoots up government troops and steals their tank. |

Who says Bond has to obey the law? He shoots up government troops and steals their tank. Exactly. There should be no limitations. If you want, you can go rogue, but be prepared to have the cops, CIA, MI6 and mummy on yo ass. Hell, I wouldn't even mind a Hot Coffee-style minigame with Roger and May Day. Press the right buttons to stay on top, and avoid getting buggered by her 9-inch strap-on dildo. |
