Mad Men

I do like Betty. Geez, I've not watched this series in over a year, so I'm trying to recall the decline of her character in the series in terms of writing. I actually liked her quite a lot early on, and not just for the obvious reasons. I felt sympatheic toward her and I was surprised that not many people did.

Sally was kind of evolved. I think the actress who plays her is a real talent, and maybe they saw potential in her. I don't know what plans, if any, they had for her at the beginning. It strikes me as a situation where the actress proved interesting and they wrote more for her to do. On that note, I can't even remember the brother's name. I know something 20 little child actors have played him over the course of the show.

As for Trudy? Yeah, Alison Brie is vry damn appealing. Ya know, I like Elizabeth Moss as an actress, but I can't see what Pete sees in Peggy.

I'm giving the show a rewatch, just to see it but with the whole picture in mind. One episode each day instead of the crazy binging I did for the last two seasons. I should be done with that right before premiere night. My viewings were kinda sparse with the first two. It's a bit of a shock to see the pilot not just because of Peggy being so different at the beginning but also because I got too used to the sweet offices of Sterling-Cooper-Draper-Pryce.

Has there been a revolving door of child actors for the boy? I honestly didn't notice. I think Sally was just one of those happy accidents, the produces noticing she has some real talent and the fact that she's entering preadolescence is setting up a goldmine of ideas of where to take the character during the craze of the 60s. I had a big smile when she screamed at the news of going to a Beatles concert.

I don't see Pete quite pining for Peggy. Occasionally there's that moment where it looks like he's thinking "if things had been different" but then brushes it aside and moves on like Peggy.

As for the post-Betty divorce women that came into Don's life, I honestly never found interesting especially Faye who was just a bore. That secretary he married at least looks nice, besides the teeth.

I liked her teeth. In Europe, we like teeth like we like our tits. Real.

I quite liked Faye.

The one I never cared for was Rosemary DeWitt from back in S1.

Speaking of S1, I liked Rachel. Ya know, the Jew.

I liked Rosemarie DeWitt in the first season. But when she came back in season 4 her Mary Louise Parker routine had gotten too close to the real thing. It took me out of the show and she's also not nearly as attractive as Mary Louise Parker.

I think I recall Weiner saying on one of the commentaries in season two that Shipka has a photographic memory so she doesn't stuff up her lines like the ones who play the brother do. I think they'll be onto the fourth in the new season.

I think Betty's deterioration is actually pretty fair, because she needed a shrink before her relationship with Don went to shit again. She was still in the right for 98% of the last season. Granted, she was right for the wrong reasons - but the only real 'kick the dog' moment was when they had her not give Carla a reference and made the doctors and lawyers crack. I still find the character fascinating and it's obviously the only role January Jones will be any good in.

Now that I think of it, I don't care for any of Don's conquests. I can't remember their names, not even his new wife. They're like tissue paper. I just watched a S1 ep and realized "oh yeah, that artsy fartsy girl".

I liked Bobbie Barrett. That woman had balls.

I bought the emotional engagement from Rachel in the pilot (That last scene between them is the only scene in the first episode I really like). The thing with Midge was obviously just a bit of fun. Bobbi Barrett was sexy as hell and combined with Weiner's whole 'Don's wants to equally control his work life and his home life and if his balls are being squeezed in one of them he'll fingerbang someone in the other sphere to make up for it' thing. The teacher thing I think was just meant to show how finished the marriage was. That and she mothered him.

But on a purely physical level, Bobbi Barrett is the only one who came close. Melinda McGraw is banging.

Oh hell, I didn't realize the new season was starting up in March. So if I wanna go through S1-4 again it's gonna be a race considering I'm watching all of the Best Picture winners before the Oscars.

I got series 4 and series 1 for Christmas (I'd had series one before, but I leant it to some 99% and apparently I was a 1% because they never saw fit to return it) so I'm about 3/4s of the way through the second season right now (Betty just threw Don out of the house. Freddy is about to piss himself at work) so the memory of Bobbi is fresh. She's a great character. Steak tartare. Fingerbanging. Car crash concussion. French-style feminism.

Only 50 some odd episodes, so you could just watch one a day, take some breaks.

Shipka is a girl where my thought process is, "She'll probably be hot in a few years. Oh my God, what did I just say to myself?"

S5 is under way, and I thought the first episode was excellent.

Really top-notch, in my opnion.
