I'm no expert on TREK or April, but a glimpse at Memory Alpha shows that April would have been 35 when Nero made his time travel incursion, creating the alternate timeline. It seems to me that they could contrive a scenario that would allow a transformed April to be active at the time of INTO DARKNESS.
But I couldn't imagine to what end. He's not a major character in Trek. He showed up in a cartoon episode. I can't imagine how they would make him a villain, or why they would.
For the sake of having some kind of TREK canon character, I guess.
That there was production art marking the gun as "April's gun" is more to go on than the "Garth of Izar" theorists had.
Personally, I'd like to believe it is April Dancer's gun and that Abrams is somehow going to ruin the UNCLE universe too.

Okay, just saw the trailer. Let me get this straight.
So, Pike says something like, "You've got no humility, but one day you're gonna make a mistake and everyone under your command will die."
Then why the fuck did they make him a captain in the last movie?

Haven't you heard? Abrams is in Japan, telling everybody that they didn't have to see the first movie to enjoy this one (it did lousy over there - maybe I need to emigrate), so they might de-canonize it?
Seriously he really is trying to get the int'l gross up, but I think that's an odd way to do it.
In order to make the Pike line work, you really have to have a considerable context. I mean, Picard was a prick from day one, so you had a LOT of time to work up to Q WHO, when he really gets put in his place.
Based on AbramsTrek, you can only assume that ALL of the characters are idiots AND without humility, plus wonder how it is they aren't blind from all those child-playing-moviemaker flares (Spock has the nictitating membrane to protect against light, but he's the only one.)

I like the marketing approach "let's promote this Star Trek film by not promoting it as a Star Trek film!"

Indeed. Those EMPIRE covers suggest it's about as much a Star Trek film as the Dark Knight Rises or some such.

pic reminds me slightly of Neil McDonough.
Oh, if only ...
Don't they realize it is the GROUP of characters on trek that should feature, not just one guy? Putting a pic of one guy up there has nothing to do with trek - oh I get it now.

Look up "Luke Skywalker Dark Empire" in Google image search. About the same costume.

Does it have a picture of Luke holding what looks like a handgun?

I was more thinking of the picture that has an orange background and he is holding his lightsaber but either way I was thinking of the Dracula popped collar black cloak look he has all through that series.
EDIT: Just noticed the M9 or whatever Kirk has in the photo and understand your reference. I was too distracted by the Sith cloak and Groucho eyebrows to see the gun.
Given how anti-gun America is right now and how traditionally pacifist the Trek franchise is it just seems unnecessarily dumb.
I love how the image doesnt indicate sci-fi at all. Pine could be playing an assassin in a modern thriller or something.

Are there many movie posters these days on which someone isn't holding a gun? It strikes me that practically everything needs to be sold as an action flick.

Prob'ly re-use this for Pine as Jack Ryan - Paramount will waste not, want not.

More on Benedict Cumberbatch as Raoul Silva John Harrison:

Further reaffirming my belief that Abrams, Orci and Kurtzmann simply watched every film that made money since 2009, and then mashed them all together and shoehorned it into the STAR TREK universe.
With every new detail revealed, this is looking more and more like a trainwreck.

Remember the YEARS of scripting delays? I'm thinking they were waiting to lay hands on particular scripts to rip them off, or failing that, waiting to see the movies to plunder them for ideas.
Whatever happened to, 'Don't write what we've already seen last year, that is old hat, do something DIFFERENT!' (I know, it's about marketing and only being able to guarantee dollars based on sure thing repetitions)

Abrams is incapable of it. He's always taken the credit for other peoples' work. He co-wrote two episodes of "Lost" and directed an episode or two of it, but he's still hailed as the mind behind it. Working with Abrams seems to be like dealing with the devil - he'll help you get your television show off the ground, but he's going to take all the credit for it.

& now he is granting a dying fan's last wish and showing him some early cut of the film.
Any goodwill generated by this is lost by the fact he made it public.

Let's hope Abrams isn't responsible for manslaughter when this guy sees the film.
Hey, it's a nice gesture. A little showy making it public, but a nice gesture. Still a crap director.

Ever since I read it, that thing from AMOK TIME keeps running through my head, words to the effect that having a thing is not as satisfying as wanting a thing. Sure hope the kid enjoys it.
It reminds me of a similar thing on TMP, where they let a kid visit the set who was probably not even going to make it to the end of 78, let alone the film's premiere. As far as I know, the only PR on it was that Koenig recorded it in his diary, no attempt to cash in. And considering what expectations were for TMP, the kid may have went out on a higher note than if he had lasted long enough to see the movie.
What is really weird is how I can empathize with these sick kids. In the late 90s I was having all sorts of weird medical things happening and nobody could tell what was wrong (all they needed to do was run an a1c and they'd've seen I was way Way WAY diabetic, but it took two more years for that to happen.) But when I got depressed thinking that my time was short, the odd thought that came to mind was:
If I promise not to blab, can I get JMS to let me know how the last 2 years of B5 are supposed to play out?
Considering I've never even rewatched B5, or even seen all of that last horrible season, the idea I could be so focused on something like that seems incredible .. yet there it was.

I am still harboring mixed feelings about Star Trek aka Star Trek 11 aka Star Trek Zero.
I feel the plot of it is too similar to Star Trek Nemesis!
