Portsmouth second most expensive behind West Ham in the Championship. Somehow not surprised despite everything recently.

Being said, Wimbledon is middle of the road in League Two. Seems like the best day out is at Rochdale.

The prices might go down if they win something.

That first day of the season and indeed the time when it feels a bit weird. When a division is seperated by a couple of points.

Pompey in true fashion salavaged a draw (Chuck Norris to thank as well as Varney) against 'Boro but flipping Scum walloping Leeds.

Wimbledon beaten.

Forget the Premierleague it all happens in the old Football League.

result of the day in the FL might well be Brighton's win. First at their new (long, long waited for) stadium and at a high-ish level.

or Guernsey's win in their first (and indeed the Channel Islands) first UK match.

Late penalty as well.

Am pleased for the Posh after their 2-1 win over Crystal Palace. Have always had a soft spot for them. And of course it's their first in the Championship.

The FL Show will be interesting. Well, until at the end Manish decides to do his weatherman routine by the tables. Chappers never bothers.

Ten to one Southampton will be praised.

Well there we go. Knocked out of the League Cup in round one by Barnet. Only three subs (two if you don't count the keeper).

Spurs v Everton postponed at the weekend due to the riots. Don't know whether Laz will be happy or sad about that news. ;)

Teaches me to predict Pompey would lose to Brighton.

Flipside, Dons' first FL win. Blasted Pompey.

Still boggles my mind how Mackail-Smith stayed in the football league when Premier League clubs were knocking on his door. Not to mention switching from Peterborough to Brighton when both clubs went up to the championship.

Wigan 1-1 Norwich, watched the game down the local pub. They've got some sort of satellite box that has channels for all the premier league games, legally too. Official Barclay Prem coverage or something.

Obviously pleased with the result, City need all the points they can get. Back four were woeful for us. Hoolahan gave away possession with countless sloppy passes. Holt wasn't sharpe enough. Crap defending. Soft penalty (but we deserved to be punished after that defending). Dreadful refereeing decisions. (Morison's yellow card). We would have been pumped about six nil had we played one of the big four (or five). Grumble grumble. Welcome to the prem I guess.

Delighted QPR got stuffed. That's a turn out for the books. Still probably won't be laughing for long, we've got Stoke at home next Saturday. God help us.

QPR made me chuckle. Good to see though the Canaries getting a point.

As for Mackail...possibly one of those who prefers 'a bigger club'.

Sort of 'Arry from us to Scummers.

Very happy actually, as long as Moyes plays two up front in our now-first game at home to QPR and doesn't hand them the initiative for us to drop points against lesser sides at home, which is something which really cost us last season. Had we started properly last season we'd have maybe even gotten into the Champions League given how crap/mediocre the teams were who took points from Goodison. We have to start going for it against the lesser sides at home, beating them as we should, and this coupled with our resolve against the likes of Chelsea & Liverpool could see us challenging the top four big-time if we start the season well. The potential's there for sure.

Typical for ManU to scrape a win when the rest of us can only manage draws.

As for the Liverpool game, was loving that first half (and Charlie Adam was my new hero) but that second half drifted off into rather average territory. Spose it was to be expected. ;)

Don't know why Kuyt was on the bench, as he had a fantastic run at the end of last season, not to mention that he would normally have taken (and scored) the pen which Suarez missed. As a blue though, I'm very happy with mid-tablers like Sunderland going to Anfield and taking a point.

I think Man United will walk the league again this season, with Chelsea in second place. Honestly can't understand all the hype Man City are getting. Maybe if they played attractive football, instead of worrying about their egos, they'll finish third maximum, IMO.

I think I heard some stat that Saturday was the first opening day of a Premiership new season ever on which none of the teams playing at home actually scored ... is that right?

Blackburn, Liverpool and Wigan all scored a goal each as home sides on Saturday. There were two goalless draws though, and I'd definitely say it was one of the dullest opening Saturdays of a Premiership season we've yet seen.

It's rare that I gush over Manchester United, but they were/are of course utterly superb. Regardless of the scoreline against Arsenal (who I feel will only get worse as the season progresses), they've done brilliantly to integrate new transfers (Young, Jones etc.) and young players (Welbeck, Smalling etc.) alike into their first team. They've become stronger than ever. Still believe United will walk the league even with Moneybag City's new signings, Aguerro and Nasri, out to prove a point.

As for Norwich, after a bizarre 4-0 loss to the Fake Dons midweek, thought they put in an excellent performance against Chelsea. A 3-1 loss to any team from the big four (or five) away from home is very respectable, especially considering one goal was a penalty against our inexperienced goalkeeper, Declan Rudd (spelt Decland if you watched MOTD), and the third goal was in the eleventh minute of stoppage time, long after City were down to ten men. John Ruddy has been pure class for us this season, and we'll miss him should he receive a suspension. And I'm delighted that Holt is of the mark with a goal to boot. Hate to whine, but Torres should have been sent off, then again that's the way of the Big Team > 'Little' Team biased referee mentality. Moan moan, grumble grumble.

This is already down as a great memory to take away once the season has finished. Pure jubilation.

Oh, and Peterborough beat Ipswich 7-1 in the current East Anglian derby. 8)

10pts for the fake dons reference.

Now, Man U yes were good but well done Norwich for taking the fight to the enemy. :)

Pompey ground out a draw with Grandpa Kanu kicking his zimmer out to head the ball in.

4-3 loss to West Ham. For one thing, more goals than we've scored in the first four games. Another, Lawro sent off, a third might explain why the Pompey fan I saw was walking up the middle of Park Lane and finally. Ugh.

At least Morecambe smashed Crawleychester

Football Thread - Page 5 Grant-holt-653657432

Scouse 1 - 1 City

As Jonathan Pearce said, a tale of two number 9's. One, a former tyre fitter, scored an excellent header to level the game. The other, the most expensive English footballer of all time, missed an absolute sitter. Puts things into perspective. Sure, Liverpool were unlucky (hit the woodwork on several occasions) but they were also very wasteful. Whilst Suarez's technical ability was second to none his attitude was a complete joke, mouthing off to a referee who was otherwise pretty lenient towards Liverpool - with the 3 minutes of stoppage time well and truly over by at least another sixty seconds, the ball roles out for a throw-in. Absolutely no reason for play to continue. But it did for a further 3 minutes with Carroll winning a dubious free-kick, that could have well cost Norwich the game had Ruddy not pulled off a remarkable save. City's defending was scrappy at times, but I can't fault the overall performance particularly from the magnificent midfield (Hoolahan, Pilkington, Johnson and Bennett robbed the opposition of the ball on countless occasions). We're starting to really look like the Premierleague package now. Eighth in the table, looking comfortable and confident sharing a real sense of togetherness. Not bad for a team that together probably isn't even worth equal to Carroll's transfer fee.
You can't buy what Norwich have got. Really proud of them.

Crumbs, we're still being linked with Ole Gunner whathisname as manager.

I'd wish Guy Whittingham became manager, at least for the derby with Scum in December. Pompey legend that he is he'd know what it means.

And for Norwich, G, looking good indeed. Hopefully you'll make it a second season. Less said about QPR the better :)

(AFC Wimbledon-watch, Steve Evans on FL Show refusing to be interviewed before or after the Crawley match, shouting "Show your clip" at camera. Man really is a Grade-A turd)
