The inevitability of a black Bond

The movement has tripled. I have no problem with other races getting excellent roles in Bond movies...Colin Salmon's Robinson was a highly-placed black guy in MI6 barking orders to Bond...but an emphatic no to a black actor being cast as Bond for all the reasons already cited.

Besides, black movie-goers do not flock to theaters to support their action heroes. Alex Cross is a fucking flop.

Good. Our movement to keep Bond from being cast with a black man has now doubled in size. And for the record, I don't give a rat's ass if anyone thinks it is racist to not want a black Bond. I'm so far past that argument I could care less what people think or say about me. Bond is white. He is British (or from the Commonwealth). He is heterosexual. He is, well...a man. And he better damn well stay that way. And I don't have a problem with just a black actor being cast as Bond; I have a problem with all other races and ethnicities being cast as Bond. I'm an equal opportunity bigot.

I have no problem with a spin-off universe of individual 00-agent films that have gay 00-agents, black 00-agents, Eurasian 00-agents, female 00-agents. I think it would be a smart move on EON's part to widen the demographics and the offerings, and I would watch them. But let me be clear: if Bond is anything less than straight, white, male and British, I'm out of here. I've already been pushed to my limit with Bond and his wearing a dress, pimping for womyn's rights issues, for having Mommy issues with M.....anymore pushing from Bab's radical feminist agenda and I'm going to push back.

If Bond is re-cast as black, I would like to see a re-do of Live and Let Die, where Bond and black Felix visit the NYC, white equivalent of Harlem to do battle with the white equivalent of Mr. Big.

Fleming's LALD or even the movie version, doesn't quite work with a black Bond, or black Felix for that matter. :afro:

I'm sorry, but does Jeffrey Wright look aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnything like Fleming's description? Okay, scratch that. I'll take race off the table. Does Jeffrey Wright look anywhere close to being as cool as Jack Lord, Rick Van Nutter, or Bernie Casey? When I was over at MI6/CBn at the time, my initial complaint about Wright wasn't that he was black, but that he was too fugly to play Felix Leiter, and in six years that criticism has never really changed. THis isn't a guy who people are going to want to be like. He's not the epitome of cool. For the love of God people!!!

I would have been so much happier with Harris' casting in this movie if she was playing Cedar Leiter. I could have gotten down with that.

Actually, Naomie Harris is great in Skyfall. She is genuinely sexy.

Oh, so you want Mista Bond to go up against Donald Trump, eh? Well, Trump is certainly a Fleming-esque villain: he's physically deformed. His skin is orange, his face is too fat to try and shove that neck into a size 16 collar, and that rug on his head could double as some sort of pet, like a cat or a rabbit, that Trump could stroke on his lap while plotting his fiendish world domination.

Alas, there are no white versions of Harlem. You'd have to find a trailer park in the rural South to find the white equivalent of Harlem, and even a white, redneck, trailer-trash park is nowhere as bad as Harlem.

I always imagined Felix Leiter to look like Robert Redford.

Don't know why so many people fap over Wright's Leiter. He's got the charisma of a tree stump. He makes Old Man Felix from GF and Felix Costanza from DAF look sprightly.

I really like Cec Linder's Felix :)

But Jack Lord and Hedison are my favourite Leiters.

Agreed. Overall, he made for a bland character.

The characters helped to make CASINO ROYALE a great novel. I feel like the film focused too much on the relationships between Bond and his mother, M, and Bond and Vesper. Mathis and Leiter just seemed to be forced into the story, as if someone who actually read the novel told Martin Campbell that it'd be a good idea to include them. Then, the way Mathis was handled in the sequel was godawful. What a waste of a good character and a good talent.

Wright's acting wasn't all that great in ROYALE, too.

I liked Wright, my only problem is that they didn't give him more, and in QOS it was even less.

My favourite Leiter is Hedison. He's very American and played foil to Bond quite well, yet still had some action skill of his own. I thinkhe best captured the Bond/Felix relationship of the early Fleming novels.

As we all know, Eon abandoned Jack Lord to ensure that Bond was the clear alpha in any future Bond/Leiter films. Hence the casting of the less rugged, less physically alpha, of Cec Linder in GF. Even though Rick Van Nutter was a return to the physically capable Leiter, he was still written as very yes-sir no-sir when it came to Bond. I do like the Linder and Norman Burton Leiters too. They weren't as subservient as Van Nutter. They were by design, no threat to Bond in the alpha department, but still were both rather animated assertive foils, who liked taking friendly jabs at Bond. Made for some good repartee.
