I'd avoid Alfredson simply because he did TINKER TAILOR. It was a decent film, but at the same time, it's too similar to Bond in its subject content.

Danny Boyle is still my pick.

If Boyle were brought in he'd likely wanna bring in A. R. Rahman to score, so he's therefore unacceptable.

"Likely" isn't "certainly". Especially since he's working with David Arnold on the Olympics; if the producers want to bring Arnold back, Boyle might not request Rahman.

And if BOND 24 were to go to India, Rahman might be a good choice for scoring those scenes.

I'd hope so. Bringing Rahman would make me actually pine for David Arnold.

My concern about Wright is that he would be a bit too much of a director for the ADHD generation.

The key difference is that in HOT FUZZ and SCOTT PILGRIM, Wright is making a satirical statement about the ADHD generation and that brand of cinema. Unlike the other directors you name, he's not being earnest.

Plus, he genuinely knows his shit.

Come on. The directors of KICK ASS, X: MEN FIRST CLASS, 28 DAYS LATER, and THE A-TEAM? Might as well bury Bond and be done with it.

My point is that just because Boyle has worked with Rahman in the past, it doesn't mean he will work exclusively with Rahman in the future. For all we know, Boyle could opt for John Murphy, who scored SUNSHINE and 28 DAYS LATER for Boyle, as well as KICK-ASS, LOCK STOCK and MIAMI VICE for Vaughn, Richtie and Mann.

28 DAYS LATER is a pretty decent film. It was more John Carpenter than John Carpenter has been since about 1983. And Boyle has also done SUNSHINE, TRAINSPOTTING and 127 HOURS. All are great films.

As for Vaughn, everyone points to Michael Fassbender's performance as being very Bond-like. You think it was just accidental that Vaughn was directing at the time, and that he had nothing to do with that? He's also worked with Craig on LAYER CAKE, which is probably one of the better British gangster films that I've seen, and believed to be the film that landed craig the role as Bond.

And I'm aware Carnahan made THE A-TEAM. I'm also aware that he made THE GREY, which was the film I had in mind when i suggested him.

Out of all those you mention, 127 HOURS is the only remotely decent one. If he kept that form for Bond, I'd be Ok, but only if. He's too much of a Guardian film critic's darling right now, what with the Olympic gig. I'd rather they went for a director with less baggage.

Bond-like or not, the film was a mess. Directing a previous Bond-esque film shouldn't be requirements for the part. Nevertheless, that doesn't excuse LAYER CAKE, STAR DUST, and KICK ASS.

Too unreliable. I haven't seen THE GREY, but I'm wary of any director of shit like THE A-TEAM getting anywhere near Bond.

It would be nice to have someone other than the tabloids writing crap about a Bond film for once. At least The Grauniad wouldn't spend six months trying to convince us that Moneypenny will be black and that all international shoots have been ditched in favour of Bognor Regis.

Maybe, but then it'd just be another couple of years of "Advice to Danny Boyle: Bring Bond into the 21st Century", "Is James Bond dead?", "Cultural Imperialism and James Bond's Penis" (that's a real title ), "How can the Bond franchise be more eco-friendly?", "Write Your Own Obituary for 007", "Danny Boyle and why Bond doesn't deserve him", in their blogs section.

And even when all of it is combined into one unholy concoction and force-fed to the reader, it's all still a more-pleasent brew than anything the likes of The Daily Mail and The Mirror have ever produced.

Besides, Bond directors shouldn't be chosen based on the content of the articles that are likely to appear once that director begins filming. If ever EON made a decison based on that, then they'd actually be guilty of most of the things everyone around here accuses them of on a daily basis.

If we're already discussing Bond 24 directors, then how about Kathryn Bigelow? I've thought she'd make a good Bond director ever since I saw K-19: The Widowmaker, and her work on The Hurt Locker reinforced that she can handle action well. Plus she tickles Babs' desire for Oscar cred while giving us a director who has shown that she is comfortable making movies about male dominated worlds without any strong agenda on her own part (Point Break is practically overflowing with testosterone, and no Judi Dench 'M' character ever pops up onscreen to chastise Keanu Reeves or Patrick Swayze for being "sexist, mysoginyst dinosaurs").

Couldn't see her directing a Bond somehow not that I'd mind. Not that Babs would mind, "Academy Award Winner" does prefix Kathryn Bigelow.

Possibly. But he's probably going to be tied up in post-production of IRON MAN 3 by the time EON are ready to go with BOND 24. And he's attached to the DEATH NOTE remake and an adaptation of DOC SAVAGE.
I meant Black could do a funner Bond film. Not necessarily B24. But your point does stand about him being rather busy lately.

There were a lot of Bigelow rumors before Sam was chosen to direct Bond 23. In fact, the general mood around here seemed to be that she was the front-runner for the job.

I'm sure Babs dreams every night of having a threesome with Craig and Bigelow.

Except Bigelow isn't British or from the Commonwealth, which seems to be the one last remaining prerequisite that Babs is holding onto. I don't doubt we'd get a female director in the near future if Babs continues to run EON, but I don't think it'll be Kathryn.

Forster was neither British nor from the Commonwealth.

If I were in charge of BOND 24, I'd consider the following directors:

Danny Boyle - largely on the strength of TRAINSPOTTING rather than SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE. Not that TRAINSPOTTING is Bondian, of course (although it does contain some amusing Bond references), but it remains one of the finest British films of the past twenty years. A Boyle Bond would doubtless have some striking visuals, and he'd be sure to get the soundtrack right.

Martin Campbell - yes, I know he's said never again, but I'd love Campbell to follow Connery's lead and made a second Bond comeback. If there's one thing we know Campbell can do brilliantly it's make a superb Bond film every ten years or so.

Anton Corbijn - for me, THE AMERICAN was rather like QUANTUM OF SOLACE done right, not so much in terms of story but in terms of atmosphere. Corbijn nailed the downbeat 1970s conspiracy thriller flavour with a sophisticated European twist that Forster seemed to be striving for, and came up with some great visuals to boot. Corbijn's CONTROL was one of the best Brit flicks in recent memory.

Alejandro González Iñárritu - perhaps a bit too arty and independent-minded for Bond, he'd at the very least make a Bond film that was stunning to look at.

Sam Mendes - granted, we've yet to see a single frame of SKYFALL, but I have an extremely good feeling about it, and I'd like to see a director do two Bonds in a row again (hasn't happened since THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS and LICENCE TO KILL, of course).

Ben Wheatley - he's pretty much just started out, but this guy is definitely a rising star (career-wise, he seems in a roughly similar position to Danny Boyle circa SHALLOW GRAVE or Matthew Vaughn circa LAYER CAKE). His hitman horror flick KILL LIST has me very curious about what he'd do with Bond and a big budget.
