Fuck.
If I had a time machine, one of things I'd take my childhood self to see would be Goldsmith's 2001 concert at the Royal Albert Hall. He played suites from THE BLUE MAX, PLANET OF THE APES, THE GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY and others.
GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY @ 05:10.

I was there and The Blue Max was a delight to hear.
Unfortunately, Jerry made the mistake of asking the audience what they would like to hear for an encore.
"Star Trek!", the morons roared. :x Twice in one concert is two times too many.

you have to admire the unmitigated gall of some people. Goldsmith would have done better to perform to an empty hall with the crowd digitally inserted later and that way any requests would be moot. Simple, as they say.

It didn't help matters that the girl I was with was coked out of her head, though it certainly made things easier later.

she had to be drugged beforehand for the concert or later? Or did she suggest Star Trek and was promptly cuffed across her backside with a cassette Blofeld fashion? :*sm*:

It would be fair to say that Star Trek was the only item on the programme that Paula had heard of, but I think I should draw a discreet veil over what happened to her backside. At least until I've finished my pint and chaser.

Just when I get some mullah to get it, the Star Trek IV expanded is out of stock. Hopefully it'll come back but as it's the second time it's out of stock since the release I'm not quite sure.

It's been out I think since Christmas but is fairly popular by the looks. The website updated past hour showing it's back in a week I think.
After that, Star Trek IV and maybe the original Galactica volumes I and II.

There's some nice moments in Davis's JP3 (The Dinosaur Fly-By, Cooper's Last Stand, The Raptor Room etc.) but it's a disappointing score on the whole. It's a good case example of a sequel score by another composer being too faithful to the original. The problem arises when Davis's own thematic material is dwarfed by Williams's, and lacks a personality of its own. Don't help either that the recording/mixing is much more poorer than the first two scores, which had great high and low end. The fact that Davis eschewed using electronics, which gave JP and TLW a great deal of edge, makes it sound fairly out of date by 2001.

Intrada have Star Trek IV expanded back in, so in like Flint this time round. Fortunately I'm still in work. Some on the intrada forum seem none too keen on the soundtrack (a couple saying Rosenman did the same soundtrack be it the Apes film or others) but who cares. Next...Star Trek VI, two pay cheques away and then the original BSG.
And perhaps, some would say, some more serious OST's.

Watching Perfect Storm and predictably irritated in Horner as the film progresses. Seemed to reach a point where he has certain portions that are used extensively in Enemy at the Gates. Chiefly that (and you'll forgive the descriptive) kind of droning, 'danger imminent' sound that in Gates was used when the German bombers approach early on and then when Danilov is about to reveal to Zaitsev the boys body hanging late on in the film. Likewise what becomes partly the love theme in Gates is used for Andrea Gail's return to Gloucester in Perfect Storm.
the 'droning' at 1.22/1.23 followed immediately at 1.25 by the 'love theme/sweeping da-da-deh-da' 2.42 also..etc, etc,etc

Curiously this Star Trek IV expanded is just what I hoped. Sure, it's likely not the best motion picture score for Trek (and yes, it's a Trek score so in theory it has that against it) but it's not bad. Didn't twig that the music for the "Previously on Star Trek" bit (that we foreigners have at the start of the film) is in fact an alternate The Whaler. "In San Francisco" took me by surprise, Scotty's sound akin to what was used for him in Trouble with Tribbles. The alternate theme yes, not suited to IV but dare I say I prefer this rendition of the TOS theme to Giapinnichio's in Star Trek XI's end credits.
On top of it all it has my favourite Trek movie poster as the album cover.
And finally, we can draw the IV Expanded Saga to an end. Good night, good luck and may the sewers of rangoon run into your breakfast.

Yeah a lot of the criticisms I hear is that it doesn't follow the "rules" the previous scores laid out, that Rosenman was "too light". Hearing the whole score by itself, including "In San Fransisco", this is truly reflects what Nimoy was going for by making a light hearted adventure for the TOS crew. Indeed the music sounds like something that would fit perfectly for a TOS comedy episode. It is the weakest score of the six TOS films, but it's goals are different and on that context it works just fine.

Indeed. It suited Nimoy's purpose fine. Makes me wonder what his score for Star Trek III would've been like if he had been able to do it rather than Nimoy stick with Horner because of Rosenman being elsewhere. Some reckon Horner should've done Star Trek IV for the 'trilogy' aspect and yes some of his scores are light (Land Before Time) but...well, it'd be a disaster.
Maybe my next paycheck can work towards Star Trek VI expanded.

I'm glad Horner did III. And I'm thinking he'd be a bit too heavy for IV.

I like to think Star Trek's II and III were 'Good Horner'.

Klaus Doldinger's Das Boot
usually I pluck U-96 and Heimkehr, the former charged with drama and something else as U-96 runs the British gauntlet at Gibraltar and the latter for U-96's charge home with Prochnow at the conning tower (the music quite like a gallop really...)
to the slightly emotive
or...simply the convoy attack featuring "Konvoi" and "Angriff"
"Alllllllllllllaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarm!"

I found the Gerhardt re-recording of THE SEA HAWK/ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD/etc. yesterday at a record shop. Now I've got both the vinyl and the CD.
