Counting the number of scenes ripped off from other movies (Godfather III, Empire Strikes Back, and The Avengers stand out) is giving me a headache.

This is nothing like any kind of Star Trek I recognize. I remember the marketing campaign for STINO at least pretended, but STINO Into Drabness just screams "we're just like all those other movies that just came out!"

Not to mention, Skyfall.

Heh, when that Godfather III bit came up I actually first thought of VOY's "Alliances".

"A Hero will Rise"

Holy Batman.

Looks like Kirk is bang on for a new Enterprise for Star Trek: Out of Darkness, onto the Tube.

I really look forward to this new ST.

Sure I am a great fan of the old series but their time is gone and the new movies have been great fun, something the later Next Gen movies forgot to deliver.

Are they just trying really hard not to promote this film as a Star Trek film? Even the 2009 film had a teaser that only showed the Enterprise in construction.

EPIC MOVIE, DATE MOVIE, now SPACE MOVIE.

I will say it looks like it might be better than the last one. This strikes me as maybe watchable, in part because I just don't give a fucking shit anymore.

You can't even tell Spock has pointy ears really in this poster. It could easily be some modern-day set "go fight them terrorists" action movie.

NERO DARK THIRTY.

They're just trying to get the popcorn crowds. I'll see the movie, and I'll give it a chance. But my interest in new Trek is basically dead.

Oh, yeah.

Do you really think the writers watch movies from before 2000, though?

With all the evidence presented, I'm now fully expect a REVENGE OF THE FALLEN-esque failure. All I got from the trailers is visual and auditory noise.

I guess if it's just Star Wars, not much else.

Honestly, the shot of Carol Marcus in lingerie, full body shot and held on for possibly longer than any other shot of the trailer, is the bit that insults me the most. That THIS is what Trek feels it needs to stoop to in order to sell.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vOIYaRb6XpQ

Remember this movie, Paramount? It made its budget back NINE TIMES OVER and look! You didn't have to whore out the female lead, and some of the scenes actually take place in SPACE! You can tell it's a Star Trek movie!

TREK HARD WITH A VENGEANCE

If I cared I'd post a link to "Summer in the City" and present a montage of STD Frisco shots ending with the explosion.

When judging how financially successful a film is, box office gross can be a misleading number. It's important to keep in mind how much the movie cost to make and remember that as a factor in how successful it was for a studio. Box office net is bad for comparing films in a series like Star Trek, however, which has stretched over thirty years, due to inflation. I find a better method is to look at how much money the film made in proportion to how much it cost. So, for example, TWOK made it's budget back nine times over, whereas STINO made it back just over three times.

Obviously, this isn't how the studios themselves tend to view things -- they spent more money making STINO than any Trek film had ever pulled in at that point, and FIRST CONTACT was considered more successful than GENERATIONS because it had a higher gross, although it cost more to make.

But, with that rubric in mind, here's a listing of how successful the Trek films have been financially -- in terms of bang for buck:

STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN - 8.8
STAR TREK IV: THE VOYAGE HOME - 6.3
STAR TREK III: THE SEARCH FOR SPOCK - 5.4
STAR TREK VI: THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY - 3.6
STAR TREK GENERATIONS - 3.4
STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT - 3.2
STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE - 3.0
STAR TREK - 2.6
STAR TREK: INSURRECTION - 1.94
STAR TREK V: THE FINAL FRONTIER - 1.9
STAR TREK: NEMESIS - 1.1

Hello, British Vulture!

Did you enjoy the previous film? Looks like Abrams is trying for more of the same, while taking in a lot of the "darker, villain heavy" atmosphere of recent successes like THE DARK KNIGHT, THE AVENGERS, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES and SKYFALL.

I do agree with Tux that it looks like it could be potentially better than the last one, but I'm also with Sykes on the marketing being very unTrek. You'd think after the success of the last film that Paramount would want to market on the iconography of it, or at least Trek in general. That's what most franchises do, like Skyfall with the gunbarrel motif, 007 logo and the theme.

I am hoping Michael Giacchino makes more use of the Trek theme. Apparently the way it was done in the last movie was basically copying Casino Royale where the theme only played at the end because the characters "earned it". Well, I hope to hear more of that theme and less of aping generic action music. But I have my doubts.

I'm just trying to remember the last time we "boldly went" somewhere that "no one has gone before" and I guess you could make a case for INSURRECTION. That kinda depresses me.

I remember Ron Moore said to some effect that the VOY writers basically had a franchise show that was guaranteed ratings thus they could do what they desired because people will always tune in for Trek, but instead played it safe and boring.
