| Third installments of superhero franchises tend to gross more than their predecessors, even if they're largely viewed as disappointments (see X-MEN: THE LAST STAND and SPIDER-MAN 3).
Viewing for THE DARK KNIGHT was very widespread. That same audience is going to return for THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, just to see how things wrap up. |

| If TDKR is as well recieved as TDK, you should see a slight increase in gross, much of which can be attributed to IMAX screens becoming much more accessible. Since TDKR will be viewed as a spectacle film, consumers will be more willing to pay extra for premium screenings, which will bump the bottom line up. Same with Avengers and 3D, even if it's a post-converted movie. |

| I like Nikki Finke's snark and with BATTLESHIT it's well-deserved. I'm no genius and even I saw this steaming, hot pile of failure two years ago when it was announced (and the story line leaking out to the Internet). Every single frame of BATTLESHIP looks like it was nicked off the TRANSFORMERS cutting room floor, and the introduction of aliens into the story was one of the dumbest moves in the history of executive decision making.
BOMBS AWAY! ‘Battleship’ Starts Weak
http://www.deadline.com/2012/05/dictator-off-to-slow-domestic-start-international-box-office-begins-stronger/
What a disaster at the North American box office this early summer weekend with everything from today and a week ago tanking except for Marvel’s The Avengers which should make another $53M. Universal’s Battleship is stuck at $9M-$11M today and $30M (which is around the same meager amount where Warner Bros’ Dark Shadows debuted last weekend and is on life support now). Parament’s The Dictator which opened weakly Wednesday is completely falling apart even for an ‘R’ rated movie with just $12M. And Lionsgate’s What To Expect When You’re Expecting is beating it with $15M. Hollywood is in a very dark mood today — and I’m finding that the movie moguls are not appreciating my humor when I ask, “Are your bags packed?” |

| Apparently both TED and MAGIC MIKE are opening "huge" according to Nikki Finke. It'll be interesting to watch the box office returns this weekend and see if there is any support for MAGIC MIKE (will women really go see a movie about male strippers? Really?!?). I think TED has an opportunity to be a huge, breakout hit comedy for the summer like BRIDESMAIDS and THE HANGOVER were for previous summers. These two films appeal to vastly different demographics, both of which have no competition for each other this weekend or perhaps the rest of the summer. What exactly is out there now that is in any way an approximation of MAGIC MIKE?
A lot of people are wondering if the change in release date for GI JOE: RETALIATION has anything to do with putting Tatum in more scenes (since he's become somewhat of an A-list star since the first film came out), and a big opening for MAGIC MIKE should cement his status as a box office draw (and will likely result in the firing of whomever made the decision to kill his character, Duke, off in the first five minutes of RETALIATION).
Tyler Perry's new movie, Madea's Witness Protection, was apparently not screened for critics.
TED may be the first comedy I go to the theater to see in 10 years.

| Box office report: 'Ted' lights up box office with $54.1 million; 'Magic Mike' sizzles with $39.2 million
http://insidemovies.ew.com/2012/07/01/box-office-report-ted-magic-mike/
Pretty good weekend at the box office all around (Channing Tatum's box office G-string runneth over). Now it'll be interesting to see if there is any buzz for THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN. I think the movie will do well, but I don't think it will be a breakout hit. Box office analysts are expecting something north of $300 million domestically, but I'm taking a wait-and-see attitude towards it.
And Pixar may want to re-evaluate their upcoming film slate. The last few films have been less than hoped for.

It has an odd opening day, July 3, which is a Tuesday but I read it's tracking at somewhere around $150m or better for the July 3 - July 8 frame. It will go well beyond $300m in the USA. The buzz down here is good, my comic book dealer and myself have already sold about 75% of a big stock of Spidey books that we both 'invested' in (meaning I made a couple thousand dollars profit) and we have another order expected in by the time the movie opens. |

Hopefully the movie will be as amazing as your avatar. I don't know where Spidey is going in such a hurry; if I was in there I know I'd never want to leave. |

Arnold Schwarzenegger's new film is a huge bomb. 6th place. Ouch! I don't know what he thought he was doing in this type of film, but he's no longer a movie star and he cannot open a film anymore. Arnold got by in some of his earlier action films because his physique and presence were able to compensate for the Austrian accent. But now he's just old AND has a thick Austrian accent. It's a hat on top of a hat. It no longer works. |
