| Ultimately, it's going to come down to the execution of the idea, rather than the merits of the idea itself. SF had the potential to be a disaster, what with a former agent turned cyberterrorist and an exploration of Bond's childhood - but in the end, it worked brilliantly. Likewise DAD had huge potential, since it had its roots in the MR novel - but it sucked because of the poor execution. |

The old MI6 like a haunted house on the Thames, Craig steering across the river Styx, crows flying towards the camera, Mr. White as a cabin-fever crazed wild man, Monica Bellucci looking like a much hotter version of Anjelica Huston in PRIZZI'S HONOR, the Palazzo SPECTRE meeting recalling EYES WIDE SHOT, and of course the music.
Agreed with all that (you could even say that Bond in his apartment conjures up the likes of REPULSION and THE TENANT). Not that the whole doomladen vibe of the teaser didn't take me by surprise (still, I guess it was meant to make people sit up and take notice). Judging by this teaser, SPECTRE will be the QUANTUM OF SOLACE to SKYFALL's CASINO ROYALE in terms of added darkness. That said, it is, of course, merely a teaser, and I imagine that much of the more traditional and "trailer-worthy" material (i.e. action and quips) hasn't even been filmed yet. Looks like Hoyt van Hoytema was a terrific choice as director of photography. - Makeshift Python wrote:

Thinking about it, I kind of understand why they might consider making this a more personal thing. What makes SPECTRE stand out so much is that it did get personal for Bond, especially with what happened with Tracy. EON is never going to play that same story again, so they're going to approach it from another angle and have SPECTRE be a personal thing for Bond from the get go. This is a crucial part of the Bond canon, and they don't want to just waste them by being a mere organization that Bond foils without any personal stakes involved. That all said, it makes me feel a little more easy about it. As I mentioned before, there were a lot of things about SF that really sounded the alarms for me, but I ended up rolling with them because Mendes and co did a better job with it than I expected. I'll just have to believe they'll handle SPECTRE just as delicate.
Interesting points. |

| I thought the teaser was great. Really loved that they focused on the atmosphere and mystery, as opposed to guns and explosions followed by quick fades to black. It really was a "teaser" in every sense of the word, and I'm glad the Bond team had the balls to present it that way.
Mendes and von Hoytema look like they're really at the top of their game. It still pisses me off that EON's two idiots-in-residence Purvis and Wade somehow managed to get hired back, but it's starting to look like the tertiary elements of the film could be overwhelmingly good enough to hopefully cover-up any sins these two dopes commit with the story. There was some fantastic imagery and atmosphere throughout the whole trailer, and I'm glad I wasn't the only to get the EYES WIDE SHUT impression when Bond walks into that secret SPECTRE meeting.
Man...I just hope they don't dive too much into Bond's past and fuck it up (I read the leaked script outline back in December when it first hit the web, but I only read it once and don't recall exactly how everything works out with that). Mendes somehow managed to make that stuff work tactfully in SKYFALL, so he's earned the benefit of the doubt in my book, for now. Apprehension regarding the story aside...I'm very happy with the teaser. Consider me impressed. |

Maybe it's just me, but I wonder if some of the bad publicity about the film (from the leaked script, the leaked emails with notes on what was wrong with the script, to the controversy over Mexico getting essentially a $20 million ad buy with the PTS) forced them to put together a teaser preview much earlier than anticipated. The preview worked for me in that it went against every expectation I had coming into it; no action, no babes...a creepy musical score (that kind of reminds me of THE OTHERS or THE WOMAN IN BLACK) and an emphasis on plot. Okay, you've got my attention. Still not saying I'm going to like it. But I do hope that Bond doesn't go to beautiful places like Austria, Morocco, Venice or Mexico and all we get are people dressed in black, cemeteries, dark skies, cold chilly remote locations in a dilapidated house.... |

For those who are curious what the "real deal" is with Oberhauser in Spectre, this is what it comes down to:
- Spoiler:
Hans Oberhauser had a son, Franz, but this son came through adoption rather than blood. Ernst Stavro Blofeld was the son of Romanian diplomats who were tortured to death, and the Oberhausers sheltered him after he was smuggled out of Romania and gave him the name Franz to protect his identity.
And James and Franz were raised together for a while, but then Franz left home because we has 10 years older than James. Or so the script would have you believe. In the end, Bond's personal mission to get Blofeld is because he repeatedly molested James when James was a young boy; NOT the stuff of which to base an entire James Bond movie upon. 007 should be saving the world, foiling diabolical schemes to control the planet; not reliving the night that Frans touched James in his no-no area that only mommies and daddies are allowed to see each other. |

GS, you crack me up with laughter every time you post. Not that I am laughing at the context, as I pretty much agree with most of what you say. I just laugh at your way with words. Keep it up..... |

Whereas I completely agree with this, I can't help but feel that Blofeld being Bond's foster brother would be an example of the so-called contrived coincidence (seriously, the best MI6 spy being the foster brother to the head of an evil organization, how many odds are there?), no matter how it would be executed. Now, if it were actually Blofeld pretending to be Oberhauser only to deceive Bond (as someone suggested), that would be a really good idea. I haven't read any of the leaks and I'm trying to stay spoiler-free, so I'm just doing assumptions here. |

| Couldn't withstand the temptation, I just had to look at this trailer. What can I say, amazing! I really loved the vibe, this is just what I hoped it would be, enigmatic, mysterious with lots of suspense and this beautiful cinematography! Wow, just wow.
Fingers crossed now the finished film turns out like this. |
