In Italy, this resurgent nationalism apparently also includes the need for a register of the Roma.

Given Gypsies' pronounced itinerant tendencies, this makes perfect sense. Nations have every right to know who is living within their borders.

The historical connotations are so grim that I am surprised any politician would choose to associate himself or herself with such an endeavor. Around a quarter of a million so called Roma were killed during the Holocaust.

Perhaps, but it's not helped by Matteo Salvini's rhetoric.

Quote :
One of the party’s 2018 campaign slogans was “Stop the Invasion,” which was accompanied by promises of border walls, sea patrols, and refusals to aid migrant boats in distress. Prior to and during the campaign, party leader Matteo Salvini also called for mass deportations and promised that if successful, his party would expel 500,000 migrants during its first year leading the government.

“Italy needs a mass cleaning,” he said in February 2017. “Street by street, neighborhood by neighborhood and by strong methods if necessary, because there are entire parts of Italy that are out of control.”

Make of that what you will.

I don't have a problem with this.

Dear me. You are free to disagree of course, but I find any political party which suggests deporting a little under 1% of the population in their first year in power extreme.
Your mileage may vary, of course.

Coincidentally, Matteo Salvini was in the news today for more charming behavior. He threatened to take away a journalist's police protection (which is necessary because his work has made him a target for the mafia) because said journalist is also critical towards the government Matteo Salvini is a part of himself.

I guess freedom of expression is the first thing to go every time around?

Aye. After Leftists took over American universities, the speech codes were erected. And selectively applied against non-Leftist speakers, of course...

Then too, you have the EU's criminal laws against so-called "incitement of racial hatred."

Borderline treason, I'd say. Then too, Western leaders have been betraying the citizens of Western nations for over half a century so there's ample precedent.

Conservative Party specialises in Regicide. Corbyn's loving it but I'm sure his band would make everything so much better. Good ol' Boris, Britain's next to last line of defence

And what if he WERE a "far right fascist"? Is that really worse than the postmodern, anti-western communism bruited by the establishment?
