| Skyfall Biggest Ever First-Week Box Office Earner In The UK
After a valiant battle, Harry Potter has lost out to older British icon – James Bond. Skyfall is breaking all box office records in the UK. While Skyfall had only the second biggest box office tally ever in the UK for the first weekend – trailing Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2 – over the first full week, Skyfall has actually managed to outpace the boy wizard’s final adventure. Skyfall has now taken an extraordinary £37.2 million in its opening week, overtaking Deathly Hallows Part 2 to secure the biggest seven day gross of all time in UK box office history. In response to the amazing news, producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli said, “We are very grateful to the Bond fans and all UK cinema audiences for making Skyfall the biggest opening week ever during our 50th anniversary year.” “The continued record-breaking success of this film is a true testament to all involved and the global power of this 50 year old franchise” said Gary Barber, chairman and chief executive Officer, MGM. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 eventually earned £73,094,187 in the UK, so Skyfall is already over halfway to overtaking it. Not bad for a film that isn’t showing anywhere in 3D, eh? Just for your interest, here are the Top 10 earners ever at the UK box office (not taking into account inflation). Where do you think Skyfall will end up? 1 Avatar – £93,442,625 2 Titanic – £79,990,624 3 Toy Story 3 – £73,405,113 4 Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part Two – £73,094,187 5 Mamma Mia! – £69,166,087 6 Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone – £63,957,673 7 The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring – £63,009,288 8 The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King – £60,880,923 9 The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers – £57,600,094 10 Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace – £56,351,660 (Oh, and we know what some of you are thinking – “Where Avengers Assemble?” 17th with £51,614,076, that’s where. Skyfall is already at number 39 on this list)

| Sony Pictures’ and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s SKYFALL, the 23rd film in the James Bond series, grossed an extraordinary $156 million this weekend, bringing the overseas total to $287 million after just 10 days. Sony’s markets earned an estimated $139 million for the weekend and MGM’s licensees did and estimated $17 million. Simply a staggering result!
GERMANY opened with a huge $23.9, which was the biggest opening of 2012, 77% bigger than the opening of Quantum of Solace and 88% bigger than Casino Royale. ITALY launched with $7.9, which was the biggest opening of a Hollywood film in 2012 and the 2nd biggest overall. It beat the opening of Quantum by 95% and Casino by 85%. SPAIN opened to $6.7, which is the 2nd biggest opening of the year behind the phenomenal The Impossible. It was 27% bigger than the opening of Quantum and 73% more than Casino. SWITZERLAND had a record-setting opening of $5.3, the biggest opening in history there, breaking Quantum of Solace’s old record. HOLLAND opened with $4.4 which was by far the biggest opening of the year there, almost 2 ½ times the previous best Dark Knight. The opening of Skyfall was 91% bigger than that of Quantum, 179% more than Casino.
AUSTRIA launched with a gigantic $3.4, more than double the previous biggest opening of 2012 (Ted), and the 2nd biggest opening of all time there behind Lord Of The Rings: Return of the King in 2003. MEXICO bowed with $3.2, which was 40% bigger than the opening of Quantum of Solace and 151% bigger than Casino Royale. In Asia, INDIA launched with a big $5.1, the 2nd biggest opening of the year there behind only The Amazing Spider-Man, beating the openings of the the #3 film Avengers by 20% and the #4 film Dark Knight by 41%. This opening was 60% bigger than Quantum’s, 82% more than Casino’s. INDONESIA opened on a rare Thursday and grossed $2.5, outgrossing the normal Wednesday openings of Quantum by 93% and Casino by almost 4 times. It was the #3 opening of the year there behind The Amazing Spider-Man and Avengers.
MALAYSIA also bowed with $2.5 and like Indonesia was the 3rd biggest opening of the year behind the same films. This was 45% bigger than Quantum’s opening frame, 160% more than Casino’s. TAIWAN also launched with $2.5, here the 2nd biggest opening of the year behind Avengers, 69% bigger than Quantum and more than 5 times the opening of Casino. SINGAPORE opened to $2.3, the 4th best opening of 2012 behind Avengers, Spider-Man, and Dark Knight. This opening beat those of Quantum by 77% and Casino by 117%. The PHILIPPINES launched with $1.9, 44% bigger than the opening of Quantum, 3 times the opening of Casino. HONG KONG also opened to $1.9 with an 80% market share, besting the opening of Quantum by 59%, Casino by 3 times. THAILAND launched with $1.8 and an 83% market share, 13% bigger than the opening of Quantum, 34% bigger than Casino.
20+ smaller markets all opened well, bigger than any of the previous James Bond films.
Holdovers were nothing less than stunning. The UK fell off just 21% from its opening weekend to gross $25.7 and bring the 10-day market cume to jaw-dropping $85.8 million. France added $14.3 in its 2nd frame to bring the market cume to $30.0, already passing the lifetime of Casino Royale and a day from passing Quantum Of Solace. The Fri-Sat-Sunday portion of the weekend fell off just 20% from last weekend’s opening. RUSSIA was off a good 47% from its opening, adding $5.2 to bring the market cume to $$16.1. BRAZIL fell just 5% from its opening frame ($3.4/$7.8 cume), KOREA was down 49% ($3.0/$11.4), SWEDEN fell off just 2% from its opening frame ($2.8/$8.1 cume), DENMARK fell 15% ($2.7/$7.5), BELGIUM was up 6% for Fri-Sun ($2.6/$4.9), POLAND fell just 24% from its opening ($1.9/$5.7), NORWAY was off 48% ($1.5/$6.5), and FINLAND fell 12% ($1.3/$4.1).
Imax issued an estimated weekend gross of $4.3 mil in 132 locations over 36 territories, or $33+k a screen. |

| That is something! Is Skyfall aiming to overtake Avatar in the UK? I think it will easily earn over $700 million internationally and potentially reach $1 billion worldwide if the Americans can match the rest of the world's enthusiasm. Sony should really have released this on Nov. 1 in the US rather than the 8th. Would've been three whole weeks of global domination, rather than two. |

Build up such huge word-of-mouth in Europe before it hits the US, so by the time it gets there everyone rushes out to see it. |

I don't think it will do enough business in the U.S. to get to $1 billion worldwide. It'll be lucky to do half of what the Batman films did in North America and those barely crossed $1 billion. |

SKYFALL needs to make it to $150 million in the UK to pass AVATAR in raw dollars. It's a reach, but doable.
For perspective, it took Quantum 3 weekends to reach $250 million internationally.

- On the cusp of its U.S. opening, Skyfall just keeps blasting ahead at the box office. The 23rd James Bond film today passed The Dark Knight Rises to become the UK’s highest-grossing film of the year. With a local take of £57M ($91.07M), the Eon Productions, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios and Sony Pictures Entertainment movie is now also the biggest Bond picture of all time in Britain, outplaying Casino Royale‘s £55.6M ($88.8M) haul in 2006. The Sam Mendes-directed Skyfall opened in 587 cinemas in the UK and Ireland on Friday October 26, beginning its overseas rollout at the same time. As of Sunday, it had taken $287M internationally and was breaking records in most territories. It starts IMAX showings in North America today and opens wide tomorrow.
If SKYFALL maintains the same durability as last week, we could be seeing some ridiculous grosses from the UK. It could be at £70M by the end of next week. |

After the US debut weekend, it should be in the $500m worldwide club...and counting. |

| In just 12 days, the new Bond movie has overtaken The Dark Knight Rises at the box office. Skyfall has already become Britain’s biggest film of 2012. In just 12 days, the new Bond movie has taken a whopping £57 million at the UK box office – more than The Dark Knight Rises (£56.2 million since July) and The Avengers (£51.6 million since April). That total is enough to make Skyfall the most successful Bond movie ever in the UK, overtaking the £55.6 million earned by 2006′s Casino Royale.

I do hope you're right, though. An opening of that size would be massive for Bond. |

| $4.6 Million IMAX/Midnight showings
“We are off to an amazing start,” Sony tells me as Skyfall begins its roll out in North America. It did $2.2 million in Thursday previews that were exclusive to 463 IMAX and Premium Large Format theaters. And beginning with midnight shows that started today, it did $2.4 million for a combined total of $4.6 million. Already, my sources say early matinees are “through the roof”, including exceptional performance from IMAX theaters that are now running with their regular schedule. Stay tuned right here for my continuous updates today and all weekend with domestic box office numbers.

| $88 million opening weekend; $37 million Friday opening The numbers are fluid. Looks like SONY is trying to keep initial projections low in case Sat-Sun box office dips, but according to Deadline it's now on pace to open at $88 million in the US. Who predicted $88 million opening weekend months ago and was told that they were crazy? I can't remember? If the $37 million number holds for Friday, the film could conceivably hit $93 million opening weekend. http://www.deadline.com/2012/11/skyfall-opens-with-imax-midnights-as-321m-bond-movie-abroad-arrives-in-u-s-canada-spielbergs-lincoln-platforms/ |

I'd like the movie to do well even if I'm not doing cartwheels...means more moola for Bond 24 :face: If you can assume three things: #1 That the $37 million estimate DH is reporting is accurate #2 That the film will follow established box office trends for Fri/Sat/Sun #3 That the film is well received by audiences and word of mouth is then good throughout the weekend.... ...then the film could hit $92-93 million in the U.S. for the weekend. Average films follow a multiplier of 2.5. In other words, whatever Friday's gross is, multiply it by 2.5 and you'll usually get your weekend results. If the film is getting particularly strong word of mouth, your multiplier could be 2.7, 2.8, 2.9, or in rare cases 3.0. I don't know what the audiences scores have been for SF yet, but if they are good then the film will probably clear $250 million in the U.S. and my prediction $206 domestically and 800 internationally will be on the low side. |

| I never thought I'd see the day. If this holds and SKYFALL goes $85mil plus OW, this means Bond sold more tickets opening weekend than any M:I movie, any Bourne movie, and 2 of the 3 Austin Powers films. It also means even with the TWILIGHT juggernaut next week, Bond could still hold up to be the best performing Bond in the states since Connery left. There is an outside chance SKYFALL will be the first $300 million Bond film, if it holds up well enough.
We could be in for one wild ride. |
