| The Avengers made a staggering $200.3 million in its opening weekend. That obliterates the previous record-holder, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows -- Part 2, by more than $30 million.

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/weekends/ "Projected to make" would probably be more accurate, as Sunday isn't over yet. We can be certain that Avengers has the new record, regardless what the final gross is. |

True, but many of the shows have been completely sold out in advance so the tab can be calculated within a fairly accurate margin. Final actual figures shouldn't change much. |

| I don't think it's particularly "terrifying" that The Avengers is doing so well. People pay to go to the movies for entertainment, and that's what The Avengers is -- good, fun entertainment. It's much better than Justin Bieber 3-D or Twilight shattering records, IMO. |

| Well, glad I didn't see it this weekend, I might have had difficulty looking for a seat.
Meanwhile George Lucas and James Cameron are shitting in their pants. |

But it doesn't address the economic and social issues, it also doesn't try making a statement about blue collar workers. |

He was surprisingly effective, IMHO. I think he was better in The Avengers than Thor. He was given far better stuff to play, too, which helped a lot. I was worried he would underwhelm - what with the focus on the Avengers coming together and their internal conflict - but Loki didn't disappoint at all. |

That's what the politicians are for. Personally I'd rather go see that sexy looking guy with the hammer...yummy... You both bring up good points. I can't critique Avengers yet since I haven't seen it, but I have read reviews that said it's great fun, without all of the heavy social issues, themes and subtle political statements that a lot of franchise films have been making the past few years. If true, it would confirm my belief that that trend is beginning to reverse, and that lighter, more escapist-type fare is going to be in vogue; I'm not talking Moonraker-ish or DAD-ish type escapism, but certainly nothing as heavy as QOS, CR, or THE DARK KNIGHT. The trick is to find the right balance; if you don't, you end up with camp failures such as GREEN LANTERN or FLASH GORDON. |

| To give perspective on how big Avengers's weekend was:
-Even when tabulating raw ticket sales, Avengers still holds the record, outselling The Dark Knight by roughly 3 million tickets. -Avenger's per theater ticket count is only behind Return of the Jedi. -In the span of 10 days, Avengers has grossed more money worldwide than any Bond film ever and has outgrossed the majority of Marvel's library, except for the Iron Man and Spiderman films -Even though it's been in general release for only 3 days, it's already grabbed the 4 day total gross record. -Avengers accounted for 82% of revenue at the box office this weekend.
Now should be the time to post one of those tracking charts like I did for The Dark Knight in 2008, but I didn't expect Avengers to open this big. |
