| Yep - collapsing/destroyed buildings forming the logo most associated with the franchise has been ripped off directly from the DKR teaser poster.
And if that's not the baddie, not sure 'long black trenchcoat' is a look Kirk should be rockin' :suspect: . |

They could set the whole thing in the writer's room, then. |

I like it, but I'm not a Trek fan, so I'm not sure how much my opinion will, or should, matter. |

| At what point will Cumberband allow himself to be captured so he can be locked up in the brig, only as a a setup for his later escape and chance to wreak havoc from aboardship?
I mean, assuming they are jumping on that whole trend too, like SF and AVENGERS did.
(if it IS Mitchell, presumably his old access codes will still work, given the lamentable security Starfleet usually has. That angle might also work if it is Garth, since it would be a play on the CODE LOWERS RELIANT's SHIELD bit in TWOK.)

I can't wait to see if that happens. |

I don't know what you mean by this specifically but the new Trek movie was vastly superior to any of the Star Wars prequels. That's like comparing AIDS with bubonic plague -- there's just no good news to be had with either. Difference is that expectations for the prequels was already low given GL's heavy involvement, whereas with the number of people who have voiced notions on how to do trek movies 'right' down through the years, you could have expected a new TREK to actually be a good movie with credible characterization and some impressive art direction -- instead of a 7 year-old's take on TREK, replete with spastic camerawork and a pseudo-mythological storyline that infuriates instead of enlightening. And that doesn't even get into the artistic disgrace of the lens flares and the utterly absurd art direction (what, do you have to wear sunglasses to be able to see your readouts? Only on the bridge of this enterprise, which is like the lipstick aisle of a TARGET store it is so bright.) |

| NuTrek is the Star Trek movie that Paramount always wanted, but could never get Roddenberry, Bennett, Nimoy, or Berman to create. It's big, flashy, and simplistic, which I don't mind when it isn't attached to a franchise that prides itself on characters, stories, and depth. Even when it doesn't always go right (TOS Season 3, Enterprise, those odd numbered films everyone hates), those three features are still there. They don't exist in any meaningful or logical fashion in NuTrek.
Old Trek is Spock, fighting between human emotions and plot logic. NuTrek is McCoy high on cordrazine, doing things that make no sense whatsoever. |

Nobody's actions make any damn since in the movie. As far as a script goes, comparing it to the Prequels, STINO (my new name for nuTrek) is much worse. At least the Prequels have stories that sorta make sense, even if Lucas made some bonehead decisions. STINO makes pretty much no sense on any level. But it's bright and loud, so people enjoy it. And it has hackneyed moments of "emotion" that are as awful as any of the Anakin/Padme scenes. Bright lights and explosions are not for me. I want to at least see a character doing something where I can understand their motivation for doing it. STINO doesn't even have that. |

| The biggest weakness NuTrek has is the entire origin story hinges on an implausible sequence of events. Pike promotes Kirk, an unauthorized stowaway with a record of cheating, to XO just because he's there, Spock kicks Kirk off the ship for disagreeing with him where he meets Old Spock, who talks destiny and friendship amongst other things. Old Spock convinces Kirk that he is destined to command the Enterprise and suggests pissing his past self off in order to show he is unfit to command.
None of that shit makes sense. Kirk should be sitting in the brig regardless of what happened and Spock is unfit for command not because of his raging fistfight, but because he marooned a crewman for disregarding command and having a strong opinion.
I'd like to think that the new movie will be better now that they've jumped through hoops to place the new crew in their appropriate roles, but nothing written or discussed about it has made me excited. Considering that nothing has changed in the writers chair, I can't hope for a better script. Maybe a less insulting one, but certainly not a good one.
Apparently, a teaser is due to arrive tomorrow. Maybe then we will know. |

| It's like the worst. Fanfic. Ever.
Seriously, it's like it was written by an 8 year-old. It bares no mark of a professional writer. It's like a bad first draft written by a retarded hyper kid on a sugar kick.
It should be required reading in any screenwriting class as an example of how NOT to write a screenplay. |

| Even the most essential connective tissue is cancerous.
The 'lightning storm' in space description. Assuming you'd actually use such an analogy, wouldn't it also match with any thousand other MUFs (mysterious unknown forces, the way people used to describe every episode of SPACE 19.99 when I was younger) seen in Trek, ranging from those pesky lights from Zetar to v'ger energy discharges? and yet that is enough for Kirk to KNOW this is history repeating itself.
God, don't get us started, we'll descend into darkness w/o even having seen the sequel. |

| I was glad they cut the technobabble, but they didn't have to literally dumb it down the way they did. "Temporal vortex" would have been simple enough, have someone explain what that is for audiences who have limited vocabulary and then they roll along with it the next time it's brought up. |

So, that pretty much makes that the FOURTH Trek film to have a villain hellbent on revenge. |

| The Japanese trailer has an interesting 'homage' at the end. Already got the spin on it figured out, though (along with most of the net, I'd guess.)
I DID like the silhouetted barely-there look for the ship/water crash, but there should be a law against all this INCEPTION-ish music being stuck into trailers.
EDIT ADDON: my wife really likes Cumberbatch from TINKER TAILOR (as do I), so I have to admit I may just go see this in the theater. I feel so bad for admitting this it isn't funny, but if the picture really has bypassed the lens-flare/overcut routine, it will remove my most basic non-story-related objections, and I can just go hoping to see a space movie w/o thinking in terms of TREK. |

| Everything goes by too fast to judge how everything looks. For what I could make out, the photography still looks over-processed to me. Blonde lady looks cute, though. Didn't see any lens flares, but we didn't see many in NuTrek's first trailer either. At least not the eye-burning variety that populated the Enterprise bridge. |
