I know that it sounds a little bit run-of-the-mill but how about 'Final Assignment'?

All you need is a brief scene in the trailer of the main villain saying "It looks like this is going to be your final assignment mister Bond mwahahahaha" to force it in. It isn't nearly as forced as many of the other Bond titles (I'm looking at you AVTAK). Maybe for Daniel Craig's final Bond film?

That's because you're a James Bond fan.

I love the logic of EON...they claim with Craig that they've 'gone back to Fleming', yet have been unable to find a suitable title or villain name from any of Fleming's writings for the last two films. You mean to tell me they couldn't work the word Shatterhand into the title somehow?

Umm ... which other writer was it who came up with the titles 'Casino Royale' and 'Quantum of Solace', then? :suspect:

Forever Never Lasts

...or any number of variations that sound suitably 'Flemingesque.'

Seriously, if EON is willing to use Fleming titles like The Living Daylights and Quantum of Solace, then almost anything could be Flemingesque, including Die Another Day or Skyfall.

...or even The Hildebrand Rarity, I suppose.

You don't like The Living Daylights? Honestly, I think it's probably the best title in the lot. There's just something about the title; it's the right length, it's hard to pin down. It doesn't translate well into other languages. It's inventive and unique.

I even like SKYFALL compared to The Hildebrand Rarity or QUANTURD OF SOLACE.

THIS. In Italy, he short story was called "The Light of Intellect", and the movie "Danger Zone". While the first title does appear at the end of the story, the second one's origin is unknown.

But please! Can someone explain me what does The Living Daylights mean?

It's not the only one, anyway. A View To A Kill (which I'm perfect aware of the meaning) was translated as "Scenery and Death" (short story) and "Moving Target" (movie). Because of this, the line "What a view."/ "To a kill" was changed to "What a view." / "And what a target".
Dr. No was translated (both some novel versions - in the other Dr. No remained) Licence to Kill, but I can't understand why, and Licence to Kill was translated Private Revenge.

Quote :
The living daylights

Meaning

A person's eyes; more recently, the life force or consciousness.

Origin

The release of the 1987 film The Living Daylights, the fifteenth in the James Bond series, reawakened usage of this old phrase. When we refer to someone having the living daylights beaten, scared, or knocked out of them, we just mean that they have been badly beaten or scared, or knocked unconscious. The imagery is of someone being so discomfited as to lose the power of sight. Like similar examples, such as 'beat the stuffing out of', the phrase is often used with an air of exaggeration and not always meant to be taken literally.

The original 18th century meaning of 'daylights' was quite specific and literal; it meant 'eyes'. That meaning has now long fallen out of use. The word was occasionally used to denote other items to do with seeing - spectacles, windows etc. (see daylight robbery), but usage of 'daylights' was largely limited to the eyes and to threats to close them by force. The first known citation of the word is one such example, in Henry Fielding's novel Amelia, 1752:

"Good woman! I don't use to be so treated. If the lady says such another word to me, d--n me, I will darken her daylights."

Francis Grose, in A Classical Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue, 1796, reinforces the pugilistic usage:

"Plump his peepers, or daylights; give him a blow in the eyes."

The 'eyes' meaning of the word was going out of use even in the 19th century, hence the emergence then of 'knocking or beating the daylights out of someone'. The phrase is intended to indicate a severe beating, but perhaps not quite that severe. There was also a later variant of the phrase - 'beat the living daylight out of...'. When referring to eyes, 'daylights' makes sense, whereas the singular 'daylight' doesn't, again indicating that the link between 'eyes' and 'daylights' was becoming defunct.

The first usage of 'beating the daylights out' that I can find is in Augustus Peirce's poem The Rebelliad, 1842:

The people used to turn about,
And knock the rulers' daylights out

By the time that the intensifier 'living' was added, the phrase had lost all association with eyes. The earliest known version of that form was printed in several US newspapers in the 1890s, for example, The Decatur Morning Review, September 1890:

"'I'm not going to be insulted by a miserable rabbit', and he started to club the living daylights out of the beast with his gun."

The 20th century version of the phrase is the American 'punch someone's lights out'. The precursor to this form of the phrase was a widely syndicated newspaper report of the 1956 fight between Sugar Ray Robinson and Carl (Bobo) Olson:

"Robinson's knockout punch turned out the lights for Bobo in the second round."

Nowhere in there did I say I dislike The Living Daylights as a title.

If I did, I might have referred to it as The Living Turdlights instead.

My point was that there are too many attempts made to come up with something that sounds 'Flemingesque' by aping one of his previous titles, but who knows what titles Fleming may have generated had he not smoked and drunk himself to death at an early age? Perhaps 'The Iron Crab' should be the next phrase to be redefined and shoved out there for public consumption. ("What's that giant mechanical tarantula doing here?" "That's the Iron Crab, Mr. Bond, and with it I shall rule the world!" "Oh, I thought maybe you were a collector of props from bad 90s western remakes.")

And Walecs: as you can see, I wasn't the one who mentioned how well or badly the titles translate.

Had one of those dreadful titles pop into my head. I imagined a GOLDEN GUN (movie) style plot about a villain and Bond playing cat and mouse, and Bond trying to track him down as the villain baits him. BLOOD CURRENT. But it sounds like the title of a Tarantino movie.

Hard to know what they'll go with for Bond 24. Skyfall is one of the few titles (the others being Tomorrow Never Dies and Die Another Day) that isn't either a Fleming story title (everything from Dr No through to The Living Daylights, and then CR and QOS) or Fleming-derived in some way (Licence To Kill, Goldeneye, The World Is Not Enough).

In Casino Royale's torture scene, Fleming described Bond's eyes as looking like currants poached in blood.

Or a very obvious anagram of KREBS which would describe the people making the film.

Agree with TLD being a brilliant title and one of the best. Great to have a title which describes beating the crap out of someone. Up there with LALD, title-wise.

Title for Bond 24? I NEED TO KNOW THAT I CAN TRUST YOU. They'll have no problem working that title into the film. laugh
